Ausgelöst durch eine Pestepidemie, die sich in der gesamten Welt ausbreitet, vermindert sich die Bevölkerung trotz aller Vorsichtsmaßnahmen kontinuierlich. Die unaufhaltsame Katastrophe wird vom Erzähler Lionel Verney anhand seines persönlichen Schicksals dramatisch und sprachgewaltig dargestellt.
About the Author: Mary Shelley, Tochter eines mit dem Anarchismus sympathisierende Sozialphilosophen und einer Frauenrechtlerin, und somit quasi von Haus aus literarisch und politisch vorbelastet, verliebte sich siebzehnjährig in den damals noch mit seiner ersten Frau verheirateten Dichter Percy Bysshe Shelley. Nach einer überstürzten Europareise, auf der die beiden Liebenden von Marys Stiefschwester begleitet wurden (die Ehefrau Percys verblieb in England, ) kehrte Mary schwanger zurück. Die nachfolgende wilde Ehe der beiden war ein Skandal. Die Hochzeit erfolgte schließlich, allerdings erst zwei Jahre später, nach dem Selbstmord von Percy Shelley erster Ehefrau. Nachdem sie 1815 ihre erste Tochter bald nach der Geburt verloren hatten, und Mary ein weiteres Kind, einen Sohn, zur Welt gebracht hatte, reiste das Paar im Jahr 1816 nach Genf. Lord Byron, ein enger Freund Percy Shelleys, stieß bald darauf zu ihnen. Dieser unterhielt zum damaligen Zeitpunkt eine Affäre mit Marys Stiefschwester Claire Clairmont, aus der ein Kind hervorging. In Lord Byrons gemieteter Villa Diodati verbrachten die Freunde einen nassen, unfreundlichen Sommer. Dort entstand während vieler Mußestunden die Idee, dass jeder der Anwesenden eine Gruselgeschichte schreiben sollte - hierauf verfasste Mary Shelley, mit gerade einmal neunzehn Jahren, ihr bekanntestes Werk Frankenstein, das 1818 veröffentlicht wurde. In den wenigen ihnen vergönnten gemeinsamen Jahren bereisten Mary und Percy Shelley Europa. Zunächst reisten sie 1814, wildromantisch mit der Kutsche, auf Eseln und zu Fuß durch das kriegsgebeutelte Frankreich bis in die Schweiz, wovon Mary später rückblickend schrieb "Es war, als lebten wir einen Roman, eine gelebte Romanze."
