Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1885 in Prag als zweiter von fünf Söhnen eines jüdischen Tuchhändlers geboren, studiert Egon (später hinzugefügt: Erwin) Kisch Geschichte und Literatur an der deutschsprachigen Karl-Ferdinands-Universität. In der Burschenschaft Saxonia Prag ficht er mehrere Säbelmensuren. Den Militärdienst verbringt er infolge seiner Bereitschaft zum Konflikt mit Vorgesetzten weitgehend im Arrest. 1906 wird er nach einer kurzen Station beim Prager Tagblatt Lokalreporter der renommierten Tageszeitung Bohemia. Als Stammgast im Weißen Hasen, dem Treffpunkt der Prager Bohème, taucht er tief ein in das literarische und künstlerische Milieu der Stadt. Sein investigativer Journalismus deckt die Affäre um den Selbstmord des Spions Alfred Redl auf und macht Kisch zu einem bekannten Journalisten. Gegen Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges, den er als Oberleutnant im K.u.k. Kriegspressequartier überlebt, wird er Mitglied im illegalen Arbeiter- und Soldatenrat und besetzt mit seinen Soldaten zum Fall der Monarchie am 12. November 1918 die Neue Freie Presse und lässt eine Sonderausgabe mit dem Aufruf zur Gründung der sozialistischen Republik Deutschösterreich drucken. 1919 wird das KPD-Mitglied in Wien zur unerwünschten
