Carl Theodor Reiffenstein (1820-1893) war ein Frankfurter Architektur- und Landschaftsmaler der Romantik. Seine Aufzeichnungen und Bilder stellen heute die wertvollste Quelle fur das Leben in der Frankfurter Altstadt im 19. Jahrhundert dar. Aber auch der Rheingau hatte es ihm angetan, den er zwischen 1838 und 1890 immer wieder besuchte und durchwanderte. Hier fand er eine Landschaft und Objekte, die seiner romantischen Sicht entsprachen; seine stimmungsvollen Landschaftsbilder brachten ihm den Beinamen eines malenden Dichters ein. Wie in seiner Heimatstadt und auf seinen Reisen durch Deutschland, die Schweiz und Italien war Reiffenstein auch im Rheingau fasziniert von der Natur und alten Mauern, mittelalterlichen Hausern und Burgen, den architektonischen Zeugen der Vergangenheit, die seit der Kindheit seine Phantasie anregten.Er sah sich an der Schwelle einer neuen Zeit, Veranderung schien ihm die Signatur seiner Gegenwart zu sein. Dem stellte er sich entgegen, mit den Mitteln der Malerei festzuhalten, was unterzugehen drohte. Diese Sicht bestimmte die Auswahl seiner Objekte, die uns ein Bild des Rheingaus zeigen, wie er heute kaum mehr existiert. Er selbst schrieb daruber: Die Bilder vergangener Zeiten entschwinden rasch aus dem Gedachtnis und wem es gelingt, sie in geeigneter, verstandlicher Weise festzuhalten, der darf den Dank der Nachwelt mit Sicherheit erwarten und seine Spuren werden sich im Sande der Zeit nicht verwehen. Aus Anlass des 200sten Geburtstags des Malers veroffentlichen die Rheingauer Heimatforscher seine Zeichnungen und Aquarelle mit Motiven aus dem Rheingau zwischen Wiesbaden und Lorch. Rund 350 bisher weitgehend unbekannte Studien und Skizzen aus der Graphischen Sammlung des Frankfurter Stadel Museums vergegenwartigen uns diese alte Kulturlandschaft in der Zeit der Rheinromantik.
