About the Book

English summary: The early Ptolemaic sarcophagus that belonged to the priest Panehemisis, which today can be found in the Art History Museum in Vienna, represents an important source for funerary texts and images from ancient Egypt. The substantial processing of the sarcophagus in Part 1, together with this section as Part 2 by Victoria Altmann-Wendling, offers an extensive paleography in which all of the present hieroglyphics are analyzed concerning their appearance and usage. A preliminary but also analytical article deals with the history of research and the provenance of the sarcophagus as well as statements on the procedures of production processes and the possibility of local workshops. This part is comparable, therefore, in terms of importance with the section from Part 1 concerning the sarcophagus of Horemheb (who came from Naucratis like Panehemisis). In the major section, around 600 different character forms from an extensive inventory of hieroglyphs are analyzed and arranged according to the current order of the Gardiner Sign List. The inventory list is supplemented through the illustration of descriptive examples in a chart. A short, statistical overview of the signs used in this sarcophagus and their functions round out this study. The majority of the items and creatures represented in the hieroglyphs provide a fascinating glimpse into the world, daily life, and religious thought of Ancient Egyptians. The detailed analysis of particular uses and formal shapes of specific signs offers the editor valuable aid to dating and origin of similar objects.
