In den traditionellen Altertumswissenschaften spielt der Senat von Rom eine Hauptrolle bei Aufbau und Expansion der romischen Republik; seit Octavian/Augustus pragen die Kaiser mit ihrem Genie oder Wahnsinn die Politik und setzen 250 Jahre lang die Massstabe fur Bauwerke, Kunst, Zeremoniell und Reprasentation, wahrend der Senat mehr oder weniger als Echoraum ihrer Machtentfaltung fungiert; im sogenannten Dominat ab 300 n. Chr. gilt er vollends als antiquarisches Relikt im dekapitalisierten Rom. Tatsachlich haben von der augusteischen res publica restituta an rund 600 Jahre lang die reichsten, gebildetsten, ambitioniertesten Exponenten der romischen Oberschicht, die Senatoren, regelmassig in der Curia Iulia/Diocletiana getagt, damit einen Zentralort der romischen Myth-Historie kontinuierlich besetzt und uber Generationen hinweg enorme Ressourcen und Prestige in diese Tatigkeit investiert. Die Arbeit postuliert einen Perspektivwechsel, indem sie a) den Romer Senat einer langen Kaiserzeit ins Zentrum der Betrachtungen ruckt, in seinem Selbstverstandnis und in seinen variierenden Beziehungen zu den Herrschern; b) anhand bildlich-archaologischer, epigraphischer, numismatischer und literarischer Befunde jene mentalen und materiellen Faktoren herausarbeitet, welche die Spielregeln fur die Koexistenz der beiden Akteure charakterisieren; c) die keineswegs lineare Evolution des Verhaltnisses zwischen SPQR (Senatus populusque Romanus) und den Caesares Augusti Imperatores bis uber das Ende des westromischen Kaisertums hinaus verfolgt. Es zeigen sich multiple Interaktionen und Verschrankungen von Kompetenzen und Rollenspielen, sowohl fur den Senat als auch fur die Kaiser, wobei Ruckgriffe, Spoliierungen oder Umdeutungen aufkumulierter historischer Vorbilder massgebend sind. Der Senat von Rom und seine Kaiser bilden als bipolare Autoritatsstruktur die conditio sine qua non fur die Persistenz des romischen Staatswesens und mussen daher als zusammengehorige, sich bedingende Teile eines Staatskonstrukts sui generis betrachtet werden.
