Ziel des vorliegenden reich bebilderten Bandes ist es, mogliche Zusammenhange zwischen modern-agyptischen Totenbrauchen und altagyptisch-religiosen Vorstellungen aufzuzeigen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit basiert auf dem Ergebnis umfangreicher kommunikativer Forschung, die in uber funfzig Orten unterschiedlicher Regionen Agyptens durchgefuhrt wurde. In der Schilderung samtlicher Brauche und Phanomene vom Moment des Todes bis zum Ende der Trauerperiode sind auch die Beschreibung unterschiedlicher Grabtypen und Friedhofe, die Ubersetzung und Bearbeitung einiger Grabinschriften, Rezitationen bei der Totenwasche und Klagelieder mit eingeschlossen. Da der Tod als Teil des gesamten Lebenszyklus unmittelbar mit Sexualitat und Geburt in Verbindung steht, sind ferner einige magische Praktiken zur Erlangung von Fruchtbarkeit berucksichtigt, sowie solche, die dem negativen Einfluss ubler Machte und von Totengeistern auf die Lebenden entgegenwirken sollen. Nach einem kurzen Exkurs uber den Grab- und Opferkult muslimischer Heiliger werden im zweiten Teil dieser Studie die fur eine Gegenuberstellung notwendigen Themenbereiche des altagyptischen Totenkultes und Bestattungsrituals behandelt, wobei auf die einzelnen thematischen Abschnitte (Grabarchitektur, Begrabnisprozession, Klageriten, Totentanz, Totenopfer usw.) jeweils ein synthetisches Kapitel folgt, in dem altes und neues Brauchtum einander gegenubergestellt werden. Ebenso wird gezeigt, in welcher Weise alte Traditionen heute eine 'islamische Transformation' durchgemacht haben, wie z.B. islamische Ausdrucke zugunsten alterer Vorstellungen umgeformt wurden, um herkommliche Brauche mit dem Glauben in Einklang zu bringen. Zum Abschluss dieser Forschungsarbeit wird ein kurzer Uberblick daruber geboten, wie sehr einige Erscheinungen der altagyptischen Gotterwelt und Volksfrommigkeit, vor allem jedoch osirianische Vorstellungen, in die heutige Heiligenverehrung des Landes eingeflossen sind.
