Due opere necessariamente incompiute accompagnano la vita di Hofmannsthal e sembrano esserne il cuore: da una parte il romanzo Andrea, dall’altra La Torre, il dramma che riprende la vicenda della Vita e sogno di Calderon. Il magico viaggio veneziano fra le maschere – e l’implacabile, statico cerimoniale spagnolo: sono le due facce di quella ‘Romania’, di quello specchio latino utopico dell’Impero absburgico, che e un fantasma perennemente attivo in Hofmannsthal e quasi il «luogo del suo linguaggio», come osserva Massimo Cacciari nel lungo saggio che accompagna questa edizione: un saggio che, a partire da questo fantasma, riesce a illuminare nelle sue articolazioni piu segrete e delicate tutta l’opera di Hofmannsthal. Dal 1901 fino alla morte, nel 1929, Hofmannsthal lavoro a piu riprese intorno alla Torre (di cui qui pubblichiamo l’ultima versione, del 1927, con l’aggiunta in appendice degli ultimi due atti della versione del 1925) – e la storia di come quest’opera gli si trasformo fra le mani equivale a una confessione. Il significato della vicenda di Sigismund – il principe prigioniero nella Torre, come una bestia selvaggia, perche gli astri hanno indicato in lui chi rovescera l’Ordine – viene avvicinato sempre di piu, e sempre piu disperatamente con gli anni, alla situazione che Hofmannsthal viveva: quella di una crisi estrema di tutta la civilta europea. La Torre e il vero (e in certo senso l’unico) «dramma del potere» dell’eta moderna: in esso una visione lucidissima, disincantata del Politico si delinea su uno sfondo di macerie, quelle stesse che, per Walter Benjamin, formavano la scena naturale del «Trauerspiel» barocco tedesco: le macerie di un Ordine che ha perduto ogni possibile legittimita, e che percio – non potendo piu raggiungere la pace vera della «harmonia mundi» – si riduce a uno strumento scordato, luogo di tutti i conflitti e di tutte le separazioni. La Dittatura, allora, sara il tentativo di celare con l’imposizione questa mancanza di fondamento del potere. E la grande arte di Hofmannsthal si rivela nell’offrirci questo conflitto insanabile «in figure», secondo il senso benjaminiano dell’allegoria – e percio scavalcando le viete soluzioni del dramma di idee. Queste pagine, per la loro densita e per l’audacia della concezione formale, si distaccano radicalmente da tutto il teatro esplicitamente ‘politico’ del Novecento: come adeguato contrappeso, reggono soltanto Gli ultimi giorni dell’umanita di Karl Kraus, il grande antagonista di Hofmannsthal. Entrambi questi testi diversissimi sono una messa in atto dell’«impossibile» tragico moderno, presentato appunto nella sua impossibilita.
