Am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges mussten im Zuge von Flucht und Vertrei-bung aus den bisherigen Ostprovinzen des Deutschen Reiches beziehungsweise aus ost- und ostmitteleuropäischen Siedlungsgebieten mit deutscher Bevölkerung rund 14 Millionen Menschen ihre angestammte Heimat verlassen. Es handelt sich nach wie vor um die größte (Zwangs-)Wanderung der Geschichte überhaupt. Der vorliegende Band versammelt individuelle Zeugnisse von Menschen, die das Geschehen seit 1944/45 selbst miterlebt und miterlitten haben, und die am Ende ihres 'weiten Weges nach Westen' in Nordrhein-Westfalen ankamen. Die Texte berichten von Heimatverlust und ungewolltem Aufbruch, aber auch von Ankunft und Neuanfang. Flucht und Vertreibung aus dem Osten am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges haben in den letzten Jahren im 'kollektiven Gedächtnis' der Deutschen einen anderen Stellenwert erhalten als dies zuvor jahrzehntelang der Fall gewesen ist. Dazu hat der politische Umbruch in Ost- und Ostmitteleuropa beigetragen, der auch einen freieren Diskurs über kontroverse Themen der gemeinsamen Vergangenheit mit unseren Nachbarn ermöglicht hat. Wenngleich nach wie vor über Ursachen, Verantwortlichkeiten und Bewer-tungen gestritten wird, ist doch das lange geltende Tabu hinsichtlich der Vertreibung aufgebrochen. Die anhaltende Debatte über die angemessene Form der Errichtung eines 'sichtbaren Zeichens' zur Erinnerung an das Schicksal der Vertriebenen zeugt einerseits von der anhaltenden Schwierigkeit des Themas, andererseits ist der feststehende Beschluss der Bundesregierung zu dessen Schaffung auch Beleg dafür, dass dieses Thema nicht mehr verdrängt werden kann. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes berichten von ihren eigenen Erfahrungen - sie gehören noch der 'Erlebnisgeneration' an, wenn sie auch zum Zeitpunkt des Geschehens noch sehr jung waren. Ihre damalige Perspektive war die von Kindern und Jugendlichen, daher richten sich ihre Zeugnisse insbesondere auch an die junge Generation von heute, die dafür sensibilisiert werden soll, was es für Menschen in ihrem Alter damals hieß, unter meist chaotischen Bedingungen und in großer Not fort und in einer ganz fremden neuen Umgebung neu anfangen zu müssen.
