Der franzosische Denker Rene Descartes ist einer der bekanntesten Philosophen der Welt. Sein kleiner Satz 'Ich denke, also bin ich' ist zum Kulturgut der gesamten Menschheit geworden. Descartes gilt als Begrunder des Rationalismus und als 'Vater der modernen Philosophie'. Dieser Ehrentitel ist durchaus angemessen, denn zu seiner Zeit wagt er etwas Bahnbrechendes. Ahnlich wie Kolumbus einen bis dahin unbekannten Kontinent, die sogenannte 'Neue Welt' entdeckt, gelingt es Descartes, eine neue Dimension des Wissens zu erschließen und unseren Blick auf die Welt zu verandern. Vor Descartes glauben die Menschen im christlichen Abendland weit uber tausend Jahre lang an die Worte der Propheten, insbesondere an Jesus Christus und die Bibel als Zeugnis gottlicher Offenbarung. Dann kommt Descartes mit einer radikalen Forderung. Das Wissen durfe nicht langer Offenbarungswissen von Propheten und Heiligen sein, sondern musse auf einer sicheren Erkenntnis beruhen: "Ich hatte von jeher das eifrige Verlangen, den Unterschied des Wahren und Falschen zu erkennen." Er stellt die fundamentale Frage: Wie kommt man zu sicherer Erkenntnis? Auf was kann ich mich wirklich verlassen? Auf das, was ich sehe und hore? Auf mein Denken und die Logik? Oder vielleicht auf das, was ich von Kindesbeinen an gelernt habe? Seine radikale Antwort lautet: Auf gar nichts! "Ich habe bemerkt (...)", so Descartes, "daß ich (...) alles von Grund aus umstoßen (...) musse, wenn ich jemals fur etwas Unerschutterliches (...) in den Wissenschaften festen Halt schaffen wollte." In seiner beruhmten Schrift 'Meditationen uber die erste Philosophie' beschreibt er seine abenteuerliche Suche nach absolut sicherem Wissen. Sein Ergebnis: Ich kann an allem zweifeln, aber in dem Moment, in dem ich zweifle, muss es mich als zweifelndes und denkendes Wesen geben: "Ich denke also bin ich". Ist das Denken wirklich unser alles entscheidendes Wesensmerkmal? Gibt es auf der Welt tatsachlich nur das Denken in uns und die seelenlosen Korper außerhalb von uns? Ist es Aufgabe der Wissenschaft, Materie, Pflanzen und Tiere sowie den menschlichen Korper zu unterwerfen? Descartes ist mehr als nur ein Wegbereiter der modernen Wissenschaft, in gewisser Hinsicht wird sein Denken zu unserem Schicksal, im Positiven wie Negativen.
