About the Book

Offshore platforms face many risks, including a hostile ocean environment, extreme temperatures, overpressure loads, fire risks, and hydrocarbon explosions, all of which pose unique challenges in designing their topside platforms. The topside design also involves the selection of appropriate materials to reduce fire risk without compromising the functional requirements. These platforms serve valuable, utility, production, and processing purposes, and can also provide living quarters for personnel. Concepts such as basic design, special design, materials selection, and risk hazards are explained in the authors' straightforward classroom style, and are based on their rich experience in both academia and industry.

Features

- Includes practical examples which are solved using international codes to offer a better understanding of the subjects presented

- Addresses safety and risk of offshore platforms, and considers numerous topside accident scenarios

- Discusses the structural and mechanical properties of various materials, such as steel and newer functionally graded materials (FGMs)

Design Aids for Offshore Topside Platforms Under Special Loads serves as a design manual for multi-disciplinary engineering graduates and practicing professionals working in civil, mechanical, offshore, naval, and petroleum engineering fields. In addition, the book will serve as reference manual for practicing design engineers and risk assessors.

About the Author:

Prof. Srinivasan Chandrasekaran has maintained a balance between academic and practical experience in the past 30 years. He has interests in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, nonlinear dynamics of offshore structures under environmental loads, structural health monitoring and control. Dr. Chandrasekaran has a combined experience of teaching, research, and Industrial consultancy and has completed many research-based industrial consultancy projects resulting in the design and development of new design principles/mechanisms as applied to buildings and offshore structures. He is an active researcher, who successfully guided about 30 research thesis, 170 papers published in refereed journals, and flag conference proceedings. He also authored about 17 textbooks in offshore structural engineering, published by leading international publishers.

Professor Arvind Kumar Jain obtained B.E. (Civil Engineering) from the then University of Roorkee, now Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Ph.D. (Structural Engineering) from IIT Delhi. His areas of research interests are Earthquake-resistant analysis of structures, wind load analysis of structures, Structural Dynamics, Offshore Structures, Tall Structures and Reliability Engineering. He has published large number of papers in International Journals and in International/National Conferences. Text book titled Ocean structures: Construction, materials and operation is a quite popular number amongst the Graduate students of Offshore engineering consultants. Besides, he has also supervised several Ph.D., and M.Tech. and B.Tech. students' projects in both civil and structural enigneering. He is member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers, USA.

Professor Nasir Shafiq is a full professor in Structural Engineering, Construction, and Materials in civil engineering, University Technology Petronas. He has 30 years of working experience as an academician, researcher, and structural design consultant. His expertise includes; Structural Reliability; High Performance and Geopolymer Concrete; Building Information Modelling, Sustainable and Low Carbon Living. He has authored more than 170 papers in the ISI and Scopus indexed journals and proceedings (Scopus ORCID: 0000-0002-9496-5430) and authored a book on Green Sustainable Construction. In addition to the professorial position, he was the director of sustainable resources mission-oriented research from July 2014 till November 2017. He has secured many research grants from various agencies in Malaysia and overseas, which makes a total sum equivalent to $2 million. He has graduated 27 Ph.D. students and 22 MSc students by research. He has served as visiting Professor in ENSAM France, Najran University Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.

Professor Mubarak Wahab, P.E, PhD, is a multifaceted, self-driven and highly motivated engineer with over 20 years of experience, a master's degree in Structural Engineering from University of Melbourne, Australia and a PhD degree from Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. In the 20 years of experience, 6 solid years of progressively responsible supervisory, managerial, and business development on construction and design projects. Academic since 2007, with research interest into structures and materials; onshore and offshore structure steel: integrity and reliability domain. Yet he has maintained a balance between academic and practical industry exposure over the years by keeping abreast with industry developments and involving in industry projects. Dr Mubarak has a combined experience of teaching, research, and Industrial consultancy and has completed many research-based industrial consultancies. To date has completed and currently managing numerous research projects (valued at USD 0.25 Million) and industry projects (valued at USD 20 Million) and published near 50 research papers.
