"Den nyuddannede præst Emanuel Hansted har vendt sin akademiske københavnerfamilie ryggen og fået arbejde som kapellan i nogle små landsogne. Han er ung, idealistisk, og fyldt med drømme om at frelse de fattige og bønderne ved oplysning og den rette tro. En del lykkes for ham, men virkeligheden svarer ikke til hans forestillinger. Romanen foregår fra 1877 og ti år frem, og Emanuel bliver part i tidens mange sociale, politiske og religiøse spændinger. Gennem en række personer, der repræsenterer hierarkierne i samfundet, får vi udfoldet et rigt tidsbillede om livet på landet. Det er levende og tidløst. Emanuel er vokset op i København i "tæppebelagte værelser med udsigt til Kanalen, Børsen og Christiansborg". Men alt dette betragter han som forløjet og overfladisk. Han er en drømmer og natursværmer, der tror på et folkeligt fællesskab med et enkelt arbejdsomt liv og kristen tro. Han bliver gift med den indadvendte bondedatter Hansine og får tre børn, hvoraf drengen dør, fordi han ikke vil lade en læge tilkalde i tide. Han bliver højskolebevægelsens nye profet. About the Author: Henrik Pontoppidan (1857-1943) var en dansk forfatter, der hovedsagelig skrev romaner. Hans tre hovedværker er Det forjættede Land, Lykke-Per og De Dødes Rige. Pontoppidan kom af en gammel præsteslægt. Som ung ville han revolutionere verden og gøre op med sin fædrene tro ved at ville være ingeniør og siden højskolelærer og forfatter. De bøger Pontoppidan skrev i sin ungdom var stærkt samfundskritiske og levede op til Georg Brandes' parole om at sætte problemer under debat. I forfatterskabets sidste fase havde Pontoppidan for længst resigneret i politisk henseende, for i stedet at besvare sin egen gåde: hvem er du selv? Pontoppidan modtog i 1917 Nobelprisen. Hans romaner og noveller giver et usædvanlig omfattende billede af hans land og tidsalder.
