About the Book

Nach zwei Weltkriegen mit über 70 Millionen Toten wollte sich in Deutschland niemand an die einzigen Klarsichtigen erinnern - an Menschen, die man in der Vergangenheit als "Friedenshetzer" und "Lumpenpazifisten" unterdrückt, verfolgt oder gar ermordet hatte. Ungelegen kam im Jahr 1948 das hier neu edierte Buch "Die deutsche Friedensbewegung 1870-1933" des in Österreich geborenen Politikwissenschaftlers Richard Barkeley. Es zeigte nicht zuletzt, wie im Schatten des unkaputtbaren Militarismus die Friedensidee schon vor dem Hitler-Faschismus mit endlosen Repressionen zum Schweigen gebracht werden sollte: "Es gehörte großer Mut dazu, Pazifist in Deutschland zu sein, im Kaiserreich und nachher. ... Die Vorbereitung des Krieges begann nicht erst unter Hitler, sondern schon am 10. November 1918, und sie wurde zielbewußt fortgesetzt von Noske und Geßler bis Blomberg. Die armen Teufel, deren Leiber irgendwo zwischen Polarkreis und Sahara vermodern, sind ebensosehr die Opfer der Aufrüstung vor 1933 wie der späteren." Zu seiner erhellenden und brillant geschriebenen Darstellung vermerkte der Verfasser 1947: "Es ist nicht leicht, die nötige Objektivität zu wahren, wenn eine Periode jüngster deutscher Geschichte zu beschreiben ist ... Deutsche Einrichtungen und Parteien mussten freimütig angegriffen werden. Das geschah weder aus Lust an der Kritik, noch um sie herabzusetzen. Es ist unmöglich, deutsche Einrichtungen oder deutsche Parteien zu schonen, wenn man bei der Wahrheit bleiben will; aber alle in der vorliegenden Schrift enthaltene Kritik soll niemand daran hindern, Einrichtungen und Parteien nunmehr Gelegenheit zu geben, aus Erfahrung und Fehlern zu lernen und sich zu bewähren ... Dieses Buch ist keine Propagandaschrift, weder für noch gegen den Pazifismus. Aber es ist eine Propagandaschrift gegen die Unterdrückung einer Idee.
