Seine Filme rufen unterschiedliche Reaktionen hervor, die von beinahe kritikloser Bewunderung bis zu schärfster Ablehnung reichen. Die große Bandbreite in der Beurteilung hat ihre Ursache in einigen Besonderheiten von Wim Wenders, auf die in diesem Aufsatz eingegangen werden wird. Eine davon ist das Merkmal des "Autorenfilms". Beinahe ohne Unterbrechung hält Wim Wenders dem "Autorenfilm" die Treue. Er ist einer der wenigen Filmemacher, der dieses Konzept hartnäckig verfolgt. "Autorenfilm" bedeutet, dass ein Film unter geringer Arbeitsteiligkeit erstellt wird und der Regisseur zumindest teilweise an dem Drehbuch mitarbeitet, falls er es nicht sogar vollständig selber verfasst. Man könnte, unter der Gefahr einer zu großen Vereinfachung und zu simplen Schematisierung, behaupten, dass man das Werk von Wim Wenders in zwei verschiedenartige Phasen einteilen kann. Die erste Periode dieses Schaffens dauerte von 1971 bis 1980. 1971 entstand sein erster langer, abendfüllender Film. In der Zeitspanne von 1971 bis 1980 wurden unter seiner Federführung Filme hergestellt, die ein recht idealistisches Bild der amerikanischen Kultur zeichnen und sich stark mit der amerikanischen Kultur auseinandersetzen. Besonders in seinem Abschlussfilm an der Filmhochschule München mit dem Titel "Summer in the City" wurde eine Hinwendung zu amerikanischen Idealen, vor allem zu denen der Popmusik und des Freiheitsmythos ersichtlich. Bereits der Titel verdeutlicht dies, ist sozusagen Teil seiner Einstellung: "Summer in the City" war einer der bekanntesten Songtitel der amerikanischen Rockgruppe "The Kinks", welche sich vor allem zu Beginn der 60er Jahre beinahe weltweit einer großen Beliebtheit erfreute.
