" Il y a longtemps, - cinquante-cinq ans au moins, - je me promenais, aux environs de Saint-Germain, avec Louis de Cormenin et son père. Timon, silencieux, selon sa coutume, la tête inclinée, nous accompagnait pendant que nous parcourions la route en jouant à saute-mouton. Il s'arrêta tout à coup devant une vaste maison environnée d'un jardin clos de murs: Maison à louer. Il demanda à la visiter, et nous entrâmes avec lui. J'ai le souvenir d'une grande construction divisée par des corridors sur lesquels s'ouvraient des chambres carrelées; cela ressemblait à une caserne ou à un hospice abandonné. Des terrains plantés de vieux arbres l'entouraient; un puits, surmonté d'une ferronnerie assez compliquée, s'élevait dans le coin d'une cour garnie de pavés. Nous suivions Timon, qui examinait toute chose avec soin et ne disait mot. Lorsque cette sorte d'inspection, à laquelle nous ne comprenions rien, fut terminée, il donna un pourboire au portier, puis, reprenant sa marche lente, il se tourna vers nous et nous dit: Ils seraient là très bien, en bon air, dans le voisinage d'une ville pleine de ressources et en marge d'une des plus belles forêts qui existent. - Qui ça ? - Les écrivains pauvres et affaiblis par l'âge; il n'en manque pas, mais il leur manque une maison de retraite où ils puissent vieillir à l'abri du besoin, et qu'un gouvernement intelligent devrait leur ouvrir. Nous écoutions, sans trop nous rendre compte des paroles prononcées par cette voix profonde, qui est une des plus sonores que j'aie entendues..."
