About the Book

DID THE KGB AND THE CIA STAND BY AND LET CASTRO KILL KENNEDY? If not, why are all these old, sad has-beens still trying to cover their blood stained foot prints? "The Devil to Pay" by Gene J. Parola, is a Murder Mystery, Spy, Sailing Adventure set aboard a yacht in the Florida Straits and the Bahamas. Sven Olafson and Matt Blair, a yacht delivery crew, pick up a client's boat at an isolated anchorage in the Bahamas. Even before they board, they find the body of GULL's boat keeper in the bottom of her dinghy. Menacing Cubans board GULL at night, threatening to tow her away to be dismantled in search for a mystery item hidden aboard. The crew deftly outsmarts the aggressors and escapes with their charge in tact, but the pursuit is on. A derelict boat surrenders a trapped, mysterious, young woman who may or may not be victim of the same shadowy group. Then an elaborate masquerade that allows GULL to escape one pack of hounds delivers her spore into the hunt by a second pack. Damaged from a midnight encounter, she is barely kept afloat by a series of extreme measures (during which a hidden canister is discovered) as she limps across the Gulf Stream to safety. But safety for the boat is not safety for the crew, for now they know too much. About what-they still don't know. Then, threatened again, they determine to find out. The tale is written from an investigative reporter's point of view as he collects the stories of the various participants and attempts a coherent assemblage. "An absorbing tale of hidden motivations that keeps the reader guessing until the end, "The Devil To Pay" is enthusiastically recommended for those mystery buffs who appreciate a well crafted tale of intrigue and suspense." Midwest Book Review "Billed as a 'sailing adventure mystery, ' this novel delivers on all counts. The diehard sailor will love the nautical language and technical details supplied throughout the text. Lovers of action-adventure mysteries will find The Devil to Pay a satisfying read. Mr. Parola uses an interesting device of placing narrative, quotes, and subtitles at the beginning of each chapter, offering the reader a glimpse ahead and providing a deeper understanding of the story. Mr. Parola is extremely skilled with dialog...." Writers Digest Excerpt: "I'm a citizen, dammit." Sven hissed as he squinted down the barrel of the borrowed .45 and into the muzzle of the 9mm. "And I'm friggin' tired of you trying to kill me for 'National Security' reasons too precious for me to know about!"
About the Author: Bio for Gene J. Parola, Called into service when the Korean war broke out, Mr. Parola served as an Air Intelligence Officer in the Navy. Then, taking his discharge in Hawaii, he married a young lady from Honolulu, and began to pursue an academic career at Indiana University and University of Michigan-Flint. He retired from Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey after several years with the Ministry of Defense, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Traveling extensively in the Middle East during the latter years has given him a perspective that makes rich reading in his three collections of short stories. It also makes settings for his mystery novels* quite authentic. Upon receiving the Writer's Digest, International First Prize award for Mrs. Parola's Memoir, "Remembering Diamond Head, Remembering Hawaii" in 2001, the couple returned to Honolulu to continue research and writing about things Hawaiian. "Lehua", is the first of a trilogy that has kept Mr. Parola in research for most of ten years. Since the action occurs before the Hawaiian written language was created, accurate information is scarce and true pictures of the Island culture must be carefully sorted out from often skewed missionary accounts. Mr. Parola has been published in two volumes of short stories by "Bamboo Ridge Press, Journal of Hawaiian Literature and Arts" and in the collection, "Voices from the Universe". He has written on the revolution in publishing in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and written for the Island retirees magazine, 'Generations'. He has published three collections of short stories. "Portraits of a Young Artist in Istanbul" from his collection, "The Little American Blonde" won an Editor's Choice Award from AuthorStand in June, 2012. AuthorStand followed up in December with a First Prize in Genre (Historical Fiction) for "Lehua, Ka'ao a ka Wahine, (Lehua, The Story of a Woman). * 'Old Sins, New Sinners', 2010 and 'The Devil to Pay', 2001, genep93@gmail.com
