Aristocrata, cosmopolita, con dominio completo del aleman, el ingles y el frances, admirador de las vanguardias, mecenas, critico de arte, editor, politico, Harry Kessler creia que la cultura era el verdadero lugar donde las personas pueden mejorar y entenderse, desarrollar una vida verdadera, sin atender a fronteras ni prejuicios de ningun tipo. Todo ello con una caracteristica diferencial: conocia a todo el mundo y todo el mundo lo conocia. Un mundo que era Europa, en concreto sus principales ciudades (Berlin, Paris, Londres, Zurich...), en realidad una red cuyos nodos eran las personas mas importantes de la cultura y la politica entre finales del siglo XIX y los anos treinta del XX. Los detalles de una vida asi hubieran quedado sumidos en el olvido si desde los 12 anos Kessler no hubiera registrado minuciosamente por escrito cada encuentro, cada experiencia cultural, cada hecho relevante que vivio, incluida su participacion en el frente durante la Gran Guerra, en un diario que ha sido la sensacion en Europa en los ultimos anos, cuando poco a poco se ha ido recuperando y editando hasta completar por ahora ocho volumenes que suman mas de 8.000 paginas y que incluyen a mas de 20.000 nombres. Solo falta editar un volumen, de los 12 a los 24 anos, que formaba parte de lo encontrado por casualidad en Palma de Mallorca en los anos ochenta tras abrir una caja fuerte que Kessler habia contratado a escondidas en un banco y que incluia todos sus cuadernos hasta 1918. Con este libro llega la primera muestra al espanol de tan ingente obra, gracias a una cuidada antologia realizada por Jose Enrique Ruiz-Domenec. Leeremos encuentros personales con Verlaine, Mann, Rilke, Nietzsche y su hermana, Einstein, Rodin, Maillol, Munch, Strauss, Woolf... pero tambien la revolucion de Berlin tras la derrota en la Primera Guerra Mundial o la ascension inesperada del smo, que cautivo para su sorpresa a su circulo mas proximo. Tambien los viajes a Barcelona y Palma, donde intento alejarse del terror que perseguia a los disidentes de la Alemania . Sin duda el acontecimiento cultural del ano.
