About the Book

English summary: The Acerra Philologica, created by the Rostock scholar Peter Lauremberg (1585-1639), which at its peak appeared as a nearly 2,000-page reference work on the ancient world, appeared between 1633 and 1788 in numerous highly disparate editions. While some issues almost exclusively deal with ancient themes, others offer much contemporary news. Some issues provide little on evidence, others are swollen with footnotes in which ancient authors are quoted at length. All in all, Acerra Philologica provides a far-ranging panorama of the lives of the ancient world. Lauremberg's idea sold well over a half century and found a wide reception: Grimmelshausen used the Acerra Philologica for his historiographical attempts, Goethe remembered the book from his childhood, Karl Philipp Moritz toyed with the idea of editing the Acerra Philologica anew. This volume, the result of a meeting held in Gotha, Germany, in 2008, is the first major publication on a work that played a significant role in the reception and transformation of the ancient world during the early modern period.
