About the Book

«Sebastian Linden's elegant book about the algebraic work of Umar al-Khayyām is a must for anyone with an interest in the history of mathem

atics. It reflects a commendable blend, on the side of its author, of technical mastery of the sources with a passionate approach to a particularly brilliant piece of mathematical ingenuity written a thousand years ago.
The book comprises a very informative and well-written historical introduction about al-Khayyām's life and work, both as mathematician and poet, as well as about the learned community of Nishapur of which he was an organic part. Against the historical context provided by this introduction, the edited translation of al-Khayyām's text is simply a pleasure to read. The detailed historical-mathematical commentary that follows helps put all the pieces together and to get a comprehensive picture of both originality and the impact of al-Khayyām.»

Heinz Klaus Strick, Leverkusen
