In dieser Geschichte der Gynäkologie des Spätmittelalters wertet Britta-Juliane Kruse bislang unbekannte Rezeptsammlungen und Traktate aus, auf deren Grundlage Ärztinnen und Hebammen Krankheiten therapierten oder die zur Eigenbehandlung von Frauen dienten. Das Alltagsleben von Frauen, das Geschlechterverhältnis, Sexualität, Menstruation, Unfruchtbarkeit, Schwangerschaft und Geburt werden in diesen Texten ebenso thematisiert wie die medizinische Praxis von Frauen im Spätmittalalter. Kruse kann zeigen, wann und wo Ärztinnen praktizierten, welche Tätigkeiten Hebammen ausführten und wie sie dafür entlohnt wurden; wie groß die Wertschätzung war, die Hebammen genossen, wie sehr sie aber auch Diffamierung und Verfolgung ausgesetzt waren.
Die beiden ersten Kapitel führen mit einem Überblick über die bisher bekannten frauenmedizinischen Texte in das Thema ein. Kapitel 3 enthält eine Zusammenschau der Inhaltsstoffe und Anwendungsformen der gynäkologischen Rezepte, Kapitel 4 die Behandlungsmethoden der wichtigsten Frauenkrankheiten, Kapitel 5 einen Überblick über die Entstehungsgeschichte und Funktion der frauenmedizinischen Texte, das folgende Kapitel eine Darstellung der Gesundheitsversorgung von und durch Frauen und speziell der Lebenssituation der Hebammen, wobei der Anteil von Chirurgen und Ärzten bei der Therapie von Frauen thematisiert wird. Daran schließt sich die Einführung in die mittelalterliche Sicht von Sexualität, Unfruchtbarkeit und Empfängnisverhütung, Schwangerschaft und Geburt sowie die Kinderfürsorge an (Kapitel 7). Es folgt in Kapitel 8 die geschichtliche Einordnung der mittelalterlichen Vorstellungen vom Frauenkörper. Den Band beschließen drei frauenheilkundliche Texte, die ins heutige Deutsch übertragen wurden. Sie zeigen den theoretischen und praktischen Kenntnisstand des Spätmittelalters und vermitteln eine Vorstellung von der medizinischen Praxis dieser Zeit.
