Das Erkennen der Diphtherie als einer spezifischen Infektions- krankheit, die durch Kontakt und nicht durch die Luft übertragen wird, die einheitliche ätiologische Zusammenziehung verschiedenartig sich äußernder Erscheinungsformen der Diphtherie zu einem Grundkrank- heitsbilde, insbesondere die Feststellung der ursächlichen Einheit zwischen Angina diphtherica und Larynxkrupp und schließlich die Einführung der Tracheotomie in die Therapie der Larynxstenosen, das ist in wenig Worten zusammengezogen die Mehrung von Kennt- nissen, die wir in bezug auf die Diphtherie PIERRE BREToNNEAu danken, also eigentlich so ziemlich alles, was wir bis heute von dieser Krankheit wirklich wissen; nur den Erreger haben wir seitdem im Di- phtheriebazillus durch LÖFFLER und das spezifische Gegengift durch BEHRING kennen gelernt und in der Intubation, die in der Idee von BoucHuT und in der praktischen Verwendbarkeit von O'DwYER uns nutzbar gemacht worden sind, haben wir ein weiteres Hilfsmittel zur Behebung von Stenosen hinzubekommen, für die seltenen Aus- nahmefälle, in denen wir heute eines solchen noch bedürfen; denn die Erfindung der Serumtherapie hat ja die Fälle selten und immer seltener werden lassen, in denen wir trotz rechtzeitiger und ausgiebiger anti- toxischer Behandlung, in Verbindung mit den Fortschritten der physikalischen Therapie und den uns zur Verfügung stehenden narko- tischen und herzbeeinflussenden Mittel etwa noch genötigt wären, die Erstickungsgefahr durch einen Eingriff auszuschließen. Wenn wir seit BREToNNEAusMitteilungen aus den Jahren 1821-1826 also auch glücklicherweise etwas dazu gelernt haben, so steht doch fest, daß ihm das Verdienst gebührt, das Krankheitsbild der Diphtherie er- faßt, entworfen, zum geistigen Eigentum des Arztes gemacht zu haben.
