About the Book

Als Georg Forster 1772 an Bord von Captain Cooks Weltumseglungsschiff ging, arbeitete Gilbert White schon seit uber zwei Jahrzehnten fern von allen Akademien an seinen eigenen naturkundlichen Beobachtungen. Vor allem an seinem Geburtsort Selborne in Hampshire in Sudengland, in dem er als Kaplan die umliegenden Pfarreien betreute, fuhrte er Tagebuch uber die Wind- und Witterungsverhaltnisse. Er verfolgte die Jahreszeiten und machte sich prazise Notizen zur Selborne’schen Pflanzen- und besonders der Tierwelt. Mit dem Stapel seiner Notizen wuchs auch seine Sammlung von in Brandy konservierten Praparaten, die seinen Besuchern den Artenreichtum der ortlichen Fauna augenfallig machte. In der Tradition der englischen »Pastoren-Naturhistoriker«, die die zoologischen und botanischen Nomenklaturen von Carl von Linne fullten, machte sich Gilbert White an die Erkundung jener Landstriche, die er sich wandernd erschließen konnte: Weideland, Kreideformationen, Heiden, Acker- und Kulturboden, Tumpel, Weiher und Flusse, Sumpfe und Trockengebiete. Seine Feldforschung im Allernachsten brachte Erstaunliches zutage: Er gilt als Entdecker der Zwergmaus als eigenstandiger Art, hat als Erster Zilpzalp, Fitislaubensanger und Waldlaubensanger anhand ihres Gesangs als drei verschiedene Vogelarten unterschieden und festgehalten, dass Eulen in B-Dur schreien. Mit Anteilnahme verfolgte er das Schicksal ortsansassiger Arten: ob Krahe, Kuckuck oder Nachtschwalben, Grillen, Heimchen – oder auch die Schildkrote seiner Tante. Als ein machtiger Eichenbaum gefallt wird, beschreibt er die Not einer Rabenfamilie, die ebendiesen Baum seit Generationen zur Heimstatt hatte; noch wahrend die Sage ihr Werk tut, sitzt die Rabenmutter im frisch bestellten Nest ... Aus den Briefwechseln mit seinerzeit weit uber England hinaus bekannten Naturforschern komponiert der Hobby-Zoologe White fast 40 Jahre lang sein Buch, das erst 1789, wenige Jahre vor seinem Tod, erscheint. Anders als seine langst vergessenen Kollegen fand »Reverend« White eine sprachliche Form, die seine Naturgeschichte von Selborne zu einem zeitlosen Klassiker der englischen Literatur machte. Nach Hunderten Ausgaben in Großbritannien und Ubersee brachte es seinem Heimatdorf Selborne einigen Ruhm und Bekanntheit – heute ist das Gilbert White House mit angegliedertem naturkundlichem Museum Ziel von Touristen aus aller Welt. »Wenn der Autor auch nur einige seiner Leser anregt, die Wunder der Schopfung starker zu achten, die allzu haufig als gewohnliche Erscheinungen hingenommen werden, so ist der Zweck dieses Buches ganz erfullt.«
