Die vorliegende Monographie ist das Ergebnis einer fünf jährigen klinischen Forschungsarbeit. Das große, auf über tausend Einzelsitzungen angewachsene Mate- rial konnte allein deshalb gewonnen werden, weil die psychotoxischen Versuche überwiegend im Dienst einer Therapie standen. Ihre Anfänge reichen in meine Assi- stentenzeit an der Universitäts-Nervenklinik Marburg im Jahr 1956 zurück. Meinem damaligen Chef, Herrn Prof. ViIlinger t, und Herrn Prof. Stutte schulde ich beson- deren Dank für die Förderung der unter den räumlich beengten Verhältnissen der Klinik und ihren Dependencen durchgeführten Versuche. Sie konnten mit Unter- stützung von Herrn Prof. Conrad t an der Göttinger Klinik in breiterem Rahmen fortgesetzt werden. Die Empirie der steuerbaren Psychose beim Gesunden forderte besondere psycho- pathologische Betrachtungsweisen. Die daseinsanalytische Forschungsrichtung, für die ich nicht zuständig bin, wurde dabei ausgeklammert. Vielmehr war es mein Anliegen, die experimentelle Psychose im Rückgriff auf eine heute mehr in den Hintergrund getretene Tradition wieder psychologisch zu untersuchen. Dabei habe ich mich be- müht, gewisse allgemeingültige und nachprüfbare Gesetzlichkeiten, zumindest für die toxische Psychose, herauszuarbeiten. Die notwendig anzustellenden methoden- kritischen Erörterungen entwickelten sich aus Diskussionen mit dem Philosophen Dr. J. Finkeldei, dem ich für seine Anregungen und die Durchsicht des Abschnittes "Methodischer Ansatz" herzlich danke. Das Gebiet der experimentellen Psychose hat sich in den letzten Jahren, besonders im Ausland, in stürmischer Entwicklung ausgeweitet und kann nur noch schwer in allen seinen Teilen überblickt werden. Die ältere und jüngere Weltliteratur habe ich so weit berücksichtigt, als sie einer umfassenden psychopathologischen Untersuchung mit Zentrierung auf die Person dient.
