In seinem Roman, 1948 in New York entstanden und ein Jahr spater beim Exilverlag Querido in Amsterdam erschienen, setzt Kesten sich intensiv mit religiosem Fanatismus auseinander. Nizza, nach Ende des Krieges: Walter Schott und seine Frau haben wie durch ein Wunder die KZ-Haft uberlebt und sind heimgekehrt an den Ort, wo sie vor der Deportation ihre Tochter Luise zurucklassen mussten. Sie finden ihr Kind unverhofft wieder – franzosische Nachbarn hatten das Madchen in einem Kloster in Avignon versteckt. Luise, von Nonnen fromm erzogen und inzwischen 17 Jahre alt, bekennt sich allerdings inbrunstig zum katholischen Glauben. Die Eltern, die durch ihre wundersame Rettung zu strengglaubigen Juden geworden sind, versuchen Luise zur ererbten Religion zuruck zu fuhren. Die Tochter widersetzt sich jedoch der Autoritat des Vaters, der zu immer drakonischeren Zwangsmaßnahmen greift. Auch der junge Sohn des Rabbi, der Luise auf den rechten Pfad zuruckbringen soll, vermag nichts auszurichten. Vielmehr verliebt er sich in das schone Madchen und vergisst daruber seinen Bekehrungsauftrag. Luise hat an ihm jedoch kein Interesse – denn auch sie ist verliebt: in einen Fotografen, der sich indes zum Atheismus bekennt. Hilfe verspricht sie sich von einem unkonventionellen Onkel, der sich einem epikuraischen Buddhismus verschrieben hat. Spannungs- und temporeich erzahlt Kesten, wie die Personen in einen Circulus vitiosus der gegenseitigen Verkennung geraten. Mehr und mehr verlieren sie sich im Labyrinth von Dogmen und abstrakten Grundsatzen. Im unbeirrten Glauben, das Gute und Richtige zu kennen, werden sie blind gegenuber den Folgen ihres Handelns und fuhren das Gegenteil dessen herbei, was sie beabsichtigen. Kesten erzahlt die Geschehnisse als eine tragikomische Farce, in der Freiheit und Toleranz einen schweren Stand haben. Wenn man die aufgesteckten Etikettchen der religiosen Richtungen mit anderen Namen versieht, erscheint der Roman heute aktueller denn je. Dem Band sind Dokumente aus Hermann Kestens Korrespondenz mit dem deutschen Filmemacher Gerhard Born mitgegeben: geplant war eine Verfilmung des Romans. In einem Brief an Kesten im Jahre 1951 resumiert der Filmemacher: "Ich glaube, es wird das erste Mal im deutschen Film sein, dass neben der Tragik oder dem Ernst so nah die Komik steht - ubrigens wie es im Leben ja auch ist." Zur Verfilmung kam es damals jedoch nicht, da man dem deutschen Publikum einen Stoff, in welchem - wenn auch nur am Rande - ein KZ vorkam, nicht zumuten wollte.
