About the Book

Der motorische Betrieb mit flüssigen Kraftstoffen ist im allgemeinen einfacher als der mit gasförmigen. Es hatte deshalb im Laufe der Zeit manchmal den Anschein, als ob mit flüssigen Kraftstoffen betriebene Motoren den Gasmotor verdrängen würden. Wirtschaftliche Erwägungen, insbesondere Mangel an flüssigen Kraftstoffen, ließen jedoch die Entwicklung des Gasmotors nie ganz zum Stillstand kommen. So setzte in Deutschland schon einige Jahre vor Ausbruch des zweit n Weltkrieges eine Blütezeit für den Gasmotor ein. Im Laufe des Krieges lagen die Aufgaben im wesentlichen in der mehr oder weniger wirtschaftlichen Umstellung von mit flüssigen Kraftstoffen betriebenen Motoren auf heimische feste Kraftstoffe. Hier wurde in kurzer Zeit Beachtliches ge- leistet und die Entwicklung der Gasmotoren wesentlich gefördert. An heimischen Kraft- stoffen kamen außer Generatorgas (aus Magerkohle, Anthrazit, Koks, Braunkohle, Torf und Holz) auch Flüssiggas, Leuchtgas, Erdgas, Methan und Klärgas in Betracht. Es war auch schon früher versucht worden, für den Dieselmotor Einrichtungen zu schaffen, um ihn erforderlichenfalls zeitweilig oder dauernd auf den Betrieb mit gas- förmigen Kraftstoffen umzustellen. Das sind die unter dem Namen "Wechselmotoren" bekannt gewordenen Maschinen, die sich von Diesel- auf Ottobetrieb und umgekehrt umstellen lassen. Der Ottomotor arbeitet normal mit niedrigerer Verdichtung als der Dieselmotor und benötigt eine Zündanlage für die Zündung des Gas-Luft-Gemisches. Daraus ergeben sich die notwendigen Umbauten. Die Umstellung ist im allgemeinen mit einem größeren Bauaufwand verbunden. Außerdem ist bei der normalen Umstellung eines Dieselmotors auf Gasbetrieb eine Leistungseinbuße in Kauf zu nehmen, deren Höhe von dem erreichbaren Gemischheiz- wert der Ladung abhängt.
