Clara Viebig, geb. am 17.7.1860 in Trier, gestorben am 31.7.1952 in Berlin. Seit 1897, als mit den Novellen 'Kinder der Eifel' und dem Roman 'Rheinlandstochter' ihre ersten Bucher erschienen, hat Clara Viebig die Aufmerksamkeit eines breiten Lesepublikums geweckt und mit immer neuen Werken uber Jahrzehnte erhalten. Viele ihrer Romane und Erzahlungen spielen im Rheinland und in der Eifel. Ein Hohelied auf die Schonheit der Mosellandschaft, aber auch eine realistische Schilderung der Winzernot in den Jahren nach dem 1. Weltkrieg bietet die Autorin ihren Lesern in 'Die goldenen Berge'. Voller Bewunderung beschreibt sie die klimatischen Vorzuge der Region, ihre Pflanzen und Blumen, die uppigen Weinstocke und dazu die herbe Schonheit der Schieferfelsen uber dem Band des Flusses, der sich friedlich durch das Tal schlangelt. Doch nicht immer ist die Mosel friedlich. Clara Viebig schildert, wie sie wild und machtig werden kann, wie bei Hochwer ihre braunen Fluten Verderben und Not bringen. Doch schließlich gehen die Wermen wieder zuruck, die Menschen raumen auf - wie seit eh und je an der Mosel - und das Leben geht weiter. Clara Viebig hat mit 'Die goldenen Berge' nicht nur einen spannenden und unterhaltsamen Roman geschrieben, sie hat auch das Leben der Moselaner in den 1920er Jahren in einer beruhrenden Schilderung festgehalten, die den Leser von heute immer noch fasziniert. Zeitgeschichtlicher Hintergrund der Romanhandlung sind die sozialen Konflikte der Weimarer Republik, die Besetzung des Rheinlandes, die Separatistenbewegung und das Scheitern der 'Rheinischen Republik'. Clara Viebig ist eine herausragende Erzahlerin, die die Erzahltradition des Gesellschaftsromans der großen Romanciers aus dem 19. Jahrhundert im zwanzigsten weitergefuhrt hat. Literaturgeschichtlich knupft sie an Theodor Fontane, Friedrich Spielhagen und Wilhelm Raabe an.
