'Die Holbeinstrasse, das ist das Europa, das ich liebe. Infolgedessen das Einzige, das ich vermisse', schrieb Eleonora von Mendelssohn kurz nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs aus dem New Yorker Exil an ihre Basler Freunde, den Kunsthandler Christoph Bernoulli und seine Frau Alice. Die Erbin eines grossen Namens gehorte ebenso wie der Dadaist Kurt Schwitters, der von der Basler Fasnacht begeisterte Bertolt Brecht oder der fur wenige Tage nach Basel emigrierte, dann aber ins 'Dritte Reich' zuruckgekehrte Theaterintendant Gustaf Grundgens zu den beruhmten Besuchern Basels. Thomas Mann hatte hier sogleich das Gefuhl, 'er bewege sich auf heimischem Boden'. Fur andere wie den Violinisten Adolf Busch, Eva-Maria Duhan, die Grande Dame des Basler Theaters, oder den Schriftsteller Hermann Kesten wurde Basel tatsachlich zur Heimat - wenn auch nicht immer zur geliebten: 'Sobald in dieser reichen, gepflegten und freundlichen Stadt mit ihren wohlausgestatteten Laden und gutgewaschenen Menschen jemand ein Wort an mich richtet, entsetzt mich das gurgelnde Kauderwelsch, das wie die letzte Flussigkeit aus einem Syphon herausgepresst wird', klagte Thea Sternheim. Portratiert werden hier in insgesamt achtzehn Miniaturen, die sich Kunstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts widmen, aber auch geburtige Basler wie der unruhmlich vertriebene Theaterdirektor Oskar Walterlin, der vielfaltig begabte, aber stets gescheiterte Filmpionier, Autor und Dali-Epigone Rene Guggenheim und der nach Bali ausgewanderte Maler Theo Meier. About the Author: Der Autor Der promovierte Theaterwissenschaftler Thomas Blubacher, 1967 in Basel geboren, ist als Regisseur fur Buhnen in der Schweiz, Deutschland, Osterreich und den USA tatig. Er publizierte u.a. eine Studie uber das Stadttheater Basel 1933-1945 ('Befreiung von der Wirklichkeit?', Basel 1995) und eine Doppelbiographie der Geschwister Eleonora und Francesco von Mendelssohn ('Gibt es etwas Schoneres als Sehnsucht?', Berlin 2008), war Autor mehrerer Radiofeatures, schrieb fur das 'Theaterlexikon der Schweiz' (dessen Chefredaktor er 1997-2001 war) und das 'Historische Lexikon der Schweiz', fur Zeitungen wie den New Yorker Aufbau, den Berner Bund und die Suddeutsche Zeitung. 2002 war er Writer-in-residence in der Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades (USA).
