Mit ihrer aktionsreichen Handlung, dem anschaulich gezeichneten Zeithintergrund, der auch einen Schulalltag zeigt, der ganzlich anders ist, als ihn Kinder heute erleben, vor allem aber mit den Figuren der klug, mutig und als eingeschworene Gemeinschaft handelnden Kinder schlagt die Geschichte junge Leser immer wieder in den Bann.Zimmerings Buch fur Kinder ab 10 Jahren hat eine ganze eigene Geschichte. Der Autor erzahlt sie in einem Das 1932 fertiggestellte Manuskript durfte in Deutschland nicht mehr erscheinen, wurde aus dem Land geschmuggelt, ins Tschechische ubersetzt und kam 1936 in Prag heraus. Das deutsche Manuskript ging auf den zahlreichen Stationen der Emigration verloren. Weil aber eine Ruckubersetzung eher einer Annaherung an das Original entspricht, schrieb Zimmering die Geschichte Anfang der funfziger Jahre noch einmal auf. Das Buch schließt mit dem zweiten Teil dieses Rahmentextes, in dem Zimmering erzahlt, was aus den in der Geschichte auftretenden Figuren wurde ... aus den Kindern, ihren Eltern und auch aus denen, die ihre Widersacher waren und Hitler treu dienten. Mit der Auskunft etwa uber das Schicksal der judischen Schwestern Rosel und Fanny oder das der Arbeiterjungen Paul und Jack schließt sich der Bogen von der Kriminalgeschichte zu einem Zeitbild der -Diktatur, das sich den jungen Lesern so ergreifend wie erhellend erschließt.
