Auch wenn Kaiser Nero seinen Gelüsten zur Ausübung der Kunst zu frönen scheint, spinnt er unablässig am Netz, in dem sich seine Feinde verfangen sollen. Den Kopf der Adler der Evocati Lartius mit der Entsendung von Spähern zur Überwachung jedes mächtig erscheinenden Mannes beauftragend, deuten die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse auf eine Zuspitzung der Lage innerhalb des Imperium Romanum hin. Wie in jedem Frühjahr sendet der Händler Amantius seinen Wagenzug zur Beschaffung des in Mogontiacum dringend bedurften Getreides. Doch kaum in Cabillonum eingetroffen, sorgt ein vor Hass sprühender Vergobret des Stammes der Haeduer für massive Bedrohungen. Auch der Treverer Tutor, aus der Falle Gerwins entkommen, plant den nächsten Schlag zur Vernichtung des Legat Verginius Rufus. An zu vielen Orten zu viele Feuer des Widerstandes gegen Rom entzündet, steigen die Provinzen Judäa und Lugdunensis sowie die Militärterritorien entlang der römischen Grenze zu Germanien zu Brennpunkten bevorstehender Auseinandersetzungen auf. Doch noch weiß kein Mann, wo die Flammen am längsten und am höchsten züngeln werden... Weil sich die Provinz Judäa erhebt und Rom zu einem Krieg zwingt, spitzt sich die Lage auch im Osten des Imperium Romanum zu. Zum Feldherrn berufen, wird Vespasian mit umfangreichen Streitkräften ausgestattet und vom Kaiser persönlich aufgefordert, die Juden 'in die Knie' zu zwingen. Aus den Militärterritorien an der Grenze zu Germanien eintreffende Botschaften berichten vom Willen der Statthalter Scribonius, eine Machtveränderung anzustreben. Ob diese Absicht allein mit den Bemühungen des Senats oder auch mit Unterstützung der gallischen Stämme vollzogen werden soll, ist längst noch nicht entschieden. Um in dieser Sache Klarheit für Roms Legionen am Rhein zu erlangen, beauftragt der Legat Verginius Rufus den jungen Hermunduren Gerwin und seine Gefährten, den tatsächlichen Stand zu ergründen. Also beginnt Gerwin eine lange Reise in die Provinz Lugdunensis...
