Eine Geschichte der europäischen Literatur der Moderne ist etwas anderes als eine Ge- schichte der modernen europäischen Literatur. Nicht, was man oft unbestimmt 'moderne Literatur' im Sinn der neuzeitlichen, gar der Gegenwart zugehörigen Literatur nennt (dies im Gegensatz zur älteren, der der Aufklärung, der sog. Klassik, der Romantik etc.) ist der Gegenstand, der hier in einem Gemeinschaftswerk zur Debatte gestellt wird, sondern die der Modeme, die weit in das 19. Jahrhundert zuriickreicht, wie es umgekehrt zeitgenössische Werke gibt, die, ohne deswegen auch als mißlungen gelten zu müssen, nicht als 'modem' bezeichnet werden können. Das hat einerseits mit dem Verlust von literarischer Tradition, von Verbindlichkeit der klassischen topoi, Sinnstiftung, der Bedeutung von Mimesis, Programatik, Didaxe, Weltanschauung, Weltvergegenwärtigung und generalisierender Zeitkritik zu tun, an- dererseits aber mit zunehmender Fremdheit, Künstlichkeit, ja Bedrohlichkeit der Welt- verhältnisse, mit der Verabschiedung des überkommenen 'Schönen' und der Verselb- ständigung der Kunst, der Umgestaltung der langgültigen Vorstellungen von Kunstwerk und Künstler, mit der Verfügbarkeit der Zeichen, die nicht mehr auf ein Bezeichnetes hin verbindlich ausgerichtet sind. Nur so wird verständlich, was Friedrich Nietzsche als " Artistenmetaphysik" bezeichnet hat, die weitereichende Nachwirkung Arthur Schopenhauers, die neue Sehweise in der Malerei des 20. Jahrhunderts, die "Ästhetik der neuen Tonkunst", die ihres einst scheinbar festen Grundes nicht mehr gewisse Erzählhaltung. Das Subjekt selbst ist so wenig fest- gelegt, wie die Dinge noch als feststellbar gelten dürfen; das eine droht wie das andere zu verschwinden.
