Samtliche weltweit noch existierende hochmittelalterliche Olifante werden im vorliegenden kritischen Katalog sowie in einem grossformatigen Tafelband umfassend dokumentiert. Die fachubergreifende Diskussion im Monografie-Teil eroffnet der Forschung innovative Perspektiven. Olifante sind aus Elefantenzahnen geschnitzte, meist reich mit wilden und fantastischen Tieren dekorierte Blasinstrumente aus dem westlichen, byzantinischen und islamischen Kulturkreis. Ausgehend von der Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Betrachtung dieser Kunstwerke als Objekte werten die einleitenden Textkapitel die Olifante nicht nur als visuelle Quelle zur Geschichte der Elfenbeinschnitzerei, sondern diskutieren neben Besonderheiten des Materials, Herstellungstechnik, Stilgruppen und Ikonografie vor allem ihren ursprunglichen Gebrauch und ihre Bedeutung einschliesslich magischer Assoziationen. Auch ihre spatere Verwendung und die Rezeption ihres Klangs - der auf beiliegender CD im Original zu horen ist - werden eingehend behandelt. Dabei ruckt geografisch der Mittelmeerraum als Zentrum des kulturellen Austauschs zwischen Orient und Okzident in den Fokus. Zu innovativen Ergebnissen fuhrt nicht zuletzt die Wurdigung der archaisierenden und antikisierenden Dekorationsmotive. Denn uber den Blick auf Traditionen und Asthetik der romanischen Kunst hinaus werfen sie damit ein Licht auf das Verhaltnis der Menschen romanischer Zeit zur Vergangenheit.
About the Author: Avinoam Shalem, Riggio Professor fur Kunstgeschichte an der Columbia University, New York, sowie Fellow am Kunsthistorischen Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institut. Von 2002 bis 2013 Professor fur Islamische Kunst am Institut fur Kunstgeschichte der LMU Munchen. Forschungen zum kunstlerischen Austausch im Mittelmeerraum sowie zur Asthetik und Geschichtsschreibung des Mittelalters. Aktuell Leitung der Forschungsprojekte Gazing Otherwise: Modalities of Seeing in Islam und Art Space und Mobility in the Early Ages of Globalization am Kunsthistorischen Institut Florenz, gefordert von der Getty Foundation.
