Nel 1924 il Giro d'Italia rischia va di non partire. Gli organizzatori non erano in grado di far fronte alle richieste economiche delle squadre e queste risposero con una diserzione in massa. Celebri campioni come Girardengo, Brunero, Bottecchia non avrebbero gareggiato; gli atleti dovevano iscriversi a titolo personale e la corsa rischiava di passare inosservata, con grave danno per gli sponsor. Occorreva qualcosa di eclatante, e si decise di accogliere la richiesta di una donna di trentatre anni che insisteva da tempo per partecipare. Si trattava di Alfonsina Strada, aveva gia affrontato due Giri di Lombardia. Il tracciato della competizione attraversava la ola per oltre 3.000 chilometri, gli iscritti furono 108, al via se ne presentarono novanta, e fra questi c'era Alfonsina. Solo in trenta completarono la gara. Il romanzo racconta la sua storia, dai tempi duri e affamati di Fossamarcia, nei pressi di Bologna dove nacque nel 1891, fino al 13 settembre del 1959, giorno della sua morte. In mezzo ci sono due guerre mondiali, la Marcia su Roma cui prese par te uno dei suoi fratelli, e poi D'Annunzio che le regalo una stella d'oro, Mussolini che volle darle un'onorificenza da lei mai ritirata, una medaglia che la zarina Alessandra le appunto personalmente al petto. E gli anni passati a esibirsi nei circhi d'Europa e due matrimoni, il primo a 14 anni, l'unico modo per andar via di casa perche i genitori le volevano impedire di gareggiare. Il giovane marito era Luigi Strada, di professione meccanico, uomo dalla psicologia molto fragile. Le offri un amore sincero, lei ne mantenne per sempre il cognome. Dalla poverta alla fama all'oblio, Alfonsina e stata una pioniera della parificazione tra sport maschile e femminile. Simona Baldelli ha trovato lo sguardo e la voce per trasformare la sua epopea in un romanzo attento alle verita della Storia e sensibile alle sfumature dei sentimenti, creativo nella struttura e libero di intrecciare i fatti concreti con l'invenzione necessaria al gesto letterario. Accade allora che nelle sue pagine Alfonsina prenda vita e ci mostri, nella scoperta di un'impresa faticosissima e anticipatrice, il ritratto di una donna che mai volle porsi dei limiti.
