Thorwen vom Eichental, erster Krieger des Königs kehrt nach langer Zeit in seine Heimat zurück. Kaum angekommen, passieren eigenartige Dinge in der Nachbarschaft: ein Schaf verschwindet schwebend im Wald. Bei seinen Erkundungen findet Thorwen sonderbare Spuren und ein Amulett des Königs - Zeichen, die ihn unruhig werden lassen. Er beschließt, die Verfolgung aufzunehmen und den König zu informieren. Noch ahnt Thorwen nicht, mit wem er es aufgenommen hat. Sein Weg führt ihn unter anderen zu dem Schmied Sedrik, von dem er Verwirrendes über den längst vergessenen Schattenwächter Targamon und seine Untergebenen, die Morghul, hört. Thorwen weiß nun, wen er verfolgt, keineswegs aber, was Targamon plant. Die Fährte verläuft geradewegs in die Goldene Stadt. Dort muss er erfahren, dass die Morghul soeben die Tochter des Königs entführt haben. Für Thorwen ist klar: Nur er kann die Prinzessin befreien und herausfinden, was der Schattenwächter vorhat. Mitten in der Nacht reitet er los - allein. Unterwegs trifft er auf Andramil, eine junge Frau, die er aus einer kniffligen Lage befreit und sicherheitshalber ein Stück weit begleiten will. Dass sie die Zauberin des Königs ist und von ebendiesem losgeschickt wurde um Thorwen zu unterstützen, weiß er freilich nicht. Schnell stellen die beiden fest, dass die Morghul der Prinzessin scheinbar nichts antun wollen. Offensichtlich folgen sie einem anderen Auftrag - mit unbestimmtem Ziel. Um mehr über den Schattenwächter und sein Reich zu erfahren, verlassen Thorwen und Andramil die Fährte und nehmen den Weg über das Nebelmoor. Sie wollen den uralten Zauberer Galanthil aufsuchen. Tatsächlich erfahren sie von ihm viele wichtige Neuigkeiten. Aber auch eine, die sie in ihren Grundfesten erschüttert: Sie beide sollen das Königreich vor der größten Gefahr seit Urzeiten bewahren. Ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit beginnt, denn der längste Tag des Jahres wird die Entscheidung tief unter der Erde, im Schattenreich, bringen.
