Die Staufer gehoren unbestritten zu den machtigsten und einflussreichsten Dynastien des Hochmittelalters. Schon als Herzoge, spater als Konige und Kaiser bestimmten sie die Geschicke Deutschlands und Europas entscheidend. Das Buch erzahlt die Geschichte der Staufer ausgehend von ihren vermuteten Anfangen als Riesgaugrafen uber die schwabische Herzogswurde hin zum Kaisertum. In Rom zum Kaiser gekront wurden drei der staufischen Herrscher: Friedrich I. Barbarossa, sein Sohn Heinrich VI. und sein Enkel Friedrich II. Lange Regierungszeiten (besonders die der beiden Friedriche) gaben den Staufern Gelegenheit und Moglichkeiten fur ein langfristiges Handeln und Wirken. Wohl nicht zuletzt deshalb gehoren sie noch heute zu den faszinierendsten unter den mittelalterlichen Herrschern. Zeiten spurbarer Veranderungen und tiefgreifenden Wandels stellten die staufischen Herrschaft vor grosse Herausforderungen, erweiterten und begrenzten zugleich die Moglichkeiten ihrer Herrschaft. Adel und Bischofe gewannen an Einfluss genauso wie die neuen stadtischen Oberschichten aus reich gewordenen Kaufleuten und Bankiers. Der Investiturstreit hatte die Stellung des Papstes als geistliches Oberhaupt der Christenheit erheblich gefestigt und beanspruchte die ubergeordnete Kontrolle der ihm zum Gehorsam verpflichteten Fursten und Konige. Das alles bildete den Rahmen fur die Aufgaben staufischer Herrschaft von Konrad III. bis Friedrich II. und indem sie diese bewaltigten, bewahrten sie ihre uberragende Wurde und Stellung. Dabei erforderte die Verteidigung der koniglich-kaiserlichen Dominanz die Anwendung neuer Herrschaftsinstrumente und Regierungsmethoden, die im Buch ausfuhrliche Darstellung finden. Politische Erfolge waren aber auch von Niederlagen begleitet, die oft genug, ein Zeichen umsichtigen Regierens der Staufer, in Kompromisse mundeten. Schwer auszuraumen dagegen waren die Konflikte der Staufer mit dem Papst: Hier ging es um Grundsatzliches - um die Stellung von Papst und Kaiser zueinander. Das Buch bietet so eine moderne, einzigartige Gesamtdarstellung der staufischen Geschichte aus der Feder eines der besten deutschsprachigen Staufer-Kenner.
