Der emeritierte Professor für Byzantinistik und neugriechische Philologie, Evangelos Konstantinou, der sich eingehend mit dem Leben und Werk des unvergesslichen Dichters des Alexis Sorbas, Nikos Kasantzakis, befasst hat, stellt dem deutschen Publikum anlässlich des 50. Todestages (26. Oktober 1957) von Kasantzakis in diesem Jahr ein repräsentatives Beispiel aus einer fast unbekannten Gattung dessen vielseitigen literarischen OEuvres, nämlich die Tragödie Kouros-Thiseas zum ersten Mal in deutscher Sprache vor. Diesem Werk gehört die große Vorliebe des Autors. Daher schrieb er kurz nach der Veröffentlichung dieses Werkes (1949) an seinen langjährigen treuen Freund Pantelis Prevelakis, der mit inniger Anteilnahme alle Stationen seines literarischen OEuvres verfolgte, dass «Kouros zu den wenigen Werken gehört, die mir gefallen». Mit diesem Werk wollte er den schwierigen Fragen des Menschen eine Antwort geben, indem er die ewigen Symbole des antiken Mythos' erneuerte. Ihm misst er eine besondere Bedeutung zu: Eine Quelle dichterischer Inspiration, die nicht nur die griechische, sondern die Weltliteratur befruchtet hat. Der Hauptheld dieser Tragödie, Thiseas, verkörpert auf einzigartige Weise die Lebens- und Weltanschauung unseres großen kretischen Autors, der danach strebte, eine Synthese der Gegensätze und Antinomien des Lebens zu erreichen. Kouros bringt den unerschütterlichen Glauben Kasantzakis' an die Macht der menschlichen Seele, «die die höchste Stufe der Wahrheit ist», zum Ausdruck. Daher fesselt und bezaubert die Lektüre dieses Werkes den Leser unserer Zeit, der verzweifelt nach dem Sinn des Lebens sucht.
About the Author: Der Autor: Nikos Kasantzakis wurde 1883 in Iraklion/Kreta geboren und studierte Jura in Athen und Paris. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Griechenland lebte er zwischen 1920 und 1933 in Frankreich, Deutschland, Österreich, Italien, der Sowjetunion, Palästina, Zypern, Spanien und Ägypten. Die Jahre zwischen 1933 und 1947 verbrachte er in Griechenland, ab 1947 ließ er sich endgültig in Frankreich nieder. Kasantzakis wurde weltberühmt durch seinen Roman Alexis Sorbas (1946). In Askese. Salvatores Dei brachte er seine Philosophie im Geiste Bergsons, Nietzsches und Schopenhauers zum Ausdruck. Als sein Hauptwerk betrachtete er seine Odyssee, ein aus 33333 Versen bestehendes Epos. Neben seiner Lyrik, Prosa und Reiseliteratur übersetzte Kasantzakis u. a. Homer, Dante, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Bergson und Darwin ins Griechische. Er starb 1957 in Freiburg im Breisgau.
