Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1862 als Sohn von Robert und Marie Hauptmann geboren, die im schlesischen Ober-Salzbrunn ein Hotel betreiben, bricht Gerhart Hauptmann nach jeweils kurzer Dauer eine landwirtschaftliche Ausbildung, das Einjährigen-Examen des preußischen Militärs, die Bildhauerklasse der könglichen Kunst- und Gewerbeschule in Breslau und schließlich ein Philosophiestudium in Jena, ein Zeichenstudium in Dresden und anschließend ein Geschichtsstudium in Berlin ab. Er begeistert sich für die utopischen Pläne einer alternativen Siedlung in Übersee mit Nacktkultur und Liebesfreiheit fern der Enge der wilhelminischen Gegenwart. Sein dauerhaftes Interesse hingegen gilt dem Theater. 1889 mit der Uraufführung seines Stücks Vor Sonnenaufgang am gerade eröffneten Berliner Lessing-Theater gelangt der Naturalismus auf die deutsche Bühne und der bis dahin unbekannte Autor wird durch den Theaterskandal, den das Sozialdrama auslöst, schlagarti
