WIE IS DIE SKRYWER?

Gebore op 29 Junie 1971 in Pretoria, in die Republiek van Suid-Afrika.

Spandeer twee jaar in Suid-Korea as Engelse onderwyser tussen 1996 en 1998.

Werk in Johannesburg vir ses maande in 1998.

Vertrek na Kaohsiung, in die suide van Taiwan, in Januarie 1999.

WAAROOR GAAN HIERDIE BUNDEL?

Ek word verteer deur vrae: Wat is die mens? Hoekom doen ons wat ons doen? Hoekom leef ons soos ons leef? Wat is "geluk"? Wat beteken dit om "ongelukkig" te wees? Wat doen mense om "tevrede" te wees? Is daar universele patrone te bespeur? Wat beteken dit om 'n "betekenisvolle lewe" te leef? Hóé leef 'n mens 'n betekenisvolle lewe? Wat is die natuur van die mens? Behoeftes, drange, doel ... Ek kan nie my lewe daaraan toewy om geld te maak terwyl ek verteer word deur hierdie vrae nie. Ek word gedryf om antwoorde te vind. Ek kan dit nie ignoreer nie.

Ten spyte van my obsessie moet ek steeds op 'n daaglikse basis speel volgens die neergelegde reëls: Ek moet kos en kruideniersware koop, huur en water en elektrisiteit betaal, ensovoorts. Ek kan nie my behoeftes vervul deur in 'n grot te woon, en te jag, of miskien my eie lappie grond te bewerk nie - nie in die wêreld waarin ek woon nie, in elk geval.

Ek het lankal geleer dat wat ek nodig het, verkrygbaar is, solank ek iets kan ruil vir die kos wat ek wil eet, en vir die klere wat ek wil aantrek. Wat ek nodig het, is krediet. Hoe kry 'n mens krediet in die hande? Deur óf 'n produk vir 'n mark te produseer, óf deur 'n diens te lewer. Dis hoekom ek om 6:45 elke oggend opstaan - sodat ek 'n diens kan lewer, krediet kan ontvang daarvoor in die vorm van kontant, wat dan omgeruil kan word vir wat ek nodig het. Of ek my dienslewering geniet, is van sekondêre belang - ek móét dit doen.

Maar steeds word ek verteer deur dit wat ek nie weet of verstaan nie. Kan daar iets soos 'n doel toegeskryf word aan die mens se lewe? Miskien, miskien nie. Wat ek weet is dat indien daar 'n doel is maar jy vervul dit nie, jy die spyt later in jou lewe sal voel soos 'n ton bakstene op jou skouers.

AUGUSTUS 1999

Die man sit op sy stoep en rook 'n sigaret. Hy dink aan die lewe, en vra homself Die Vraag. Hy't die oorleweringe en doktrines van sy jeug laat vaar, en kyk nou na sy eie lewenservarings en al die kennis wat hy sover opgedoen het, en poog om daarin te soek na 'n antwoord. Hy sal dit vind: in sy eie ervaringe, in sy kennis, in homself, en in ander mense. Want net soos hý soek, uit die wese van sy natuur en gedryf deur sy instinkte, so soek ander ook.

Niemand beskik oor volmaakte kennis nie, maar luister na 'n honderd mense, en jy sal 'n honderd brokkies inligting kry wat deel vorm van die geheel. Baie brokkies kennis sal oorvleuel, en daar is vele wat slegs resiteer wat aan hulle geleer word. Daar's ook biblioteke vol boeke van mense wat generasies of eeue gelede kennis van die Waarheid gehad het, al het hierdie kennis deur die generasies, of oor die eeue heen, soms vergete geraak.

Soms sal jy iemand vind - deur 'n persoonlike ontmoeting, deur 'n storie of 'n artikel of 'n nuusberig te lees, deur 'n film te kyk of deur iemand se musiek te luister - wat lank genoeg sy of haar eie ervaringe gekontempleer het ten einde te beskik oor wat genoem kan word, Dieper Kennis. Op dieselfde wyse, indien hy ernstig is oor sy soeke, sal ook die man op die stoep vrede vind oor wat sý lewe beteken.

"Ek sê graag dat ek 'n kenner van iets wil wees. Maar 'n kenner van wat? Geskiedenis? Filosofie? Sielkunde? Ek sal eenvoudig moet leer wat ek kan van al hierdie onderwerpe, omdat dit die enigste manier is om die een vraag te beantwoord waarop ek my hele volwasse lewe al gefokus is: Wat maak die lewe die moeite werd vir die gemiddelde persoon in die moderne wêreld?"
