Es ist die wahre Geschichte der Frauen meiner Familie, die aus ihrem bisherigen geborgenen Milieu herausgerissen Heldenstücke vollbringen, ausgeliefert an Hunger und eisige Kälte, den tödlichen Bombenangriffen ständig ausgesetzt. Den großen Mut, den die zwanzigjährige Frieda immer wieder beweist, um die lebensnotwendige Milch für den Säugling zu beschaffen, und die sich nochmals in die Festung Breslau wagt, um zu versuchen ihren zurückgehaltenen kriegsgeschädigten Vater aus der Stadt heraus zu holen. Schutzlose und wehrlose Frauen, die die Folgen und Konsequenzen des Krieges zu tragen haben, die mit Situationen konfrontiert und Entscheidungen treffen müssen, die sie über sich hinauswachsen lassen. Als krasser Gegensatz, wie verschieden das Leben zu dieser Zeit sein konnte, wird am Beispiel Schwedens, am Ende des Buches, gezeigt. Dort propagierte man unter anderem für mehr Freiheit für Kinder, während Kinder in Deutschland um das tägliche Brot bangen mussten.
About the Author: KARIN ROOS hat nach ihrer Heirat mit einem Schweden zwei Drittel ihres Lebens in Schweden gelebt, studiert und gearbeitet und ist Mutter von zwei Kindern. In der Nachkriegsgeneration aufgewachsen, mit dem Fluchtschicksal ihrer Familie vor Augen, ist es ganz natürlich, dass die Kriegsproblematik bei ihr nie an Interesse verloren hat. Da sie grösstenteils im Ausland gelebt hat, hat sie auch mit anderen Brillen, als nur der eigenen zu sehen gelernt, und andere Bilder und Auffassungen vermittelt bekommen. Ihre Überzeugung ist jedoch, dass jedes menschliche Leiden, verursacht durch Krieg, ein Verbrechen ist. Wie krass sich Lebensbedingungen unterscheiden können, davon abhängig, welchen Geburtsort ein unvorhersehbares Schicksal ausgewählt hat, wird am Ende als Hintergrundinformation gezeigt.
