Während Anaële in die Klauen des teuflischen Abts Suger gerät, steht Edmond vor einer unmöglichen Entscheidung. Wie soll er entweder die Comtesse oder die Burg im Stich lassen? Kann er dem stummen Sklaven aus maurischer Gefangenschaft mit den erstaunlichen Talenten, der mit seinen eigenen Dämonen kämpft, wirklich vertrauen? Und welche Hilfe ist von einer Handvoll Knappen und einer Schar beherzter junger Damen zu erwarten? Auch wenn sich der kecke Knappe Amedée wie das Äffchen des Kalifen von Jerusalem am Glockenseil der Burgkapelle herunterhangelt, um die Geschehnisse zu dirigieren - am Ende scheint es, als verliere Anaële alles.
