Im Gegensatz zu den vorwiegend kognitiven-intellektuell ausgerichteten Fächern, können Leistungsunterschiede im Sportunterricht allerdings weitaus häufiger festgestellt und direkt beobachtet werden. Treten Leistungsschwächen in den meisten anderen Schulfächern in der Regel nur dann deutlich auf, wenn die Lehrkraft Ergebnisse von Lernprozessen abruft, vollzieht sich im Gegensatz dazu im Sportunterricht der Großteil der Lernschritte aufgrund der körperlich-motorischen Akzentuierung auf der offenen Bühne. Da motorische Leistungen zudem vergleichsweise leicht und direkt nachvollziehbaren Beurteilungskriterien zu Grund liegen, bleiben Leistungsschwächen der Schüler: innen den Lehrkräften im Sportunterricht in den seltensten Fällen verborgen. Diese Leistungsunterschiede erfordern hinsichtlich der Planung einer Unterrichtseinheit ein hohes Maß an Kompetenz seitens der Lehrperson. Die Aufgabe besteht darin, durch geeigneter Differenzierungsmaßnahmen sowohl den leistungsstarken als auch den leistungsschwachen Kindern ein optimales Angebot an Übungs- und Spielformen zu offerieren, um eine persönliche Entwicklung zu gewährleisten. Im Sportunterricht empfiehlt sich demnach eine die methodische Differenzierung, welche in die konvergente (annähernde) und die divergente (auseinanderstrebende) Differenzierung untergliedert werden kann. Erster zielt primär darauf ab, die Schüler: innen von verschiedenem Ausgangsniveau zum gleichen Ziel, wie beispielsweise Techniken und Kernübungen einzelner Sportarten, zu bringen.
