Im folgenden Kapitel werden sowohl die traditionelle als auch die moderne Führung verglichen und anschließend in einer persönlichen Reflexion gegenübergestellt. Ein Kernelement der digitalen Transformation bildet die maßgebliche Veränderung im Hinblick auf das Führungsverhalten und den einzelnen Führungsstilen ab. Doch was bedeutet Führung, wie ist sie entstanden und wie hat sich diese über die Jahrhunderte entwickelt? Nach der von Edwin Rühli geltenden Definition von Führung verstehen wir Führung als eine Ganzheit von Prozessen, Institutionen und Methoden, welche im Rahmen von Problemlösungen durch zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen der Planung und Entscheidung sowie der Aufgabenübertragung und Kontrolle dient. Diese Ganzheit endet schlussendlich in unterschiedlich ausgeprägten Führungsstilen. Erste Führungstheorien entstanden Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts mit der 'Great Man Theorie', welche den ideologischen Ansatz verfolgt, dass Führungspersönlichkeiten angeboren seien und die Kompetenz der Führung somit nicht erlernbar sei.
