The chapter starts: "This Digital Basics Section covers the basics of the Internet. Before that, let me share a story. Not a story, an incident; repeated incidents. It was before the arrival of the internet, email, etc. People fully relied on the postal services to send letters. A young guy, working in the Gulf, had only a few days of vacation. Within those few days, he could finally find a girl from a village to marry. After the hastily arranged marriage, he went back to the Gulf with a heavy heart, leaving the bride at his parental home along with his elderly parents. The young wife received her first loving letter from her husband from the Gulf. Being an illiterate village girl, she asked the mail carrier to read the letter for her. The mail carrier opened the letter and started reading to her. When he read the lines of her husband's recollection of the first night with his wife, she felt very shy and nervous. She didn't allow the mail carrier to continue to read, until he covered his ears first. The mail carrier complied, covered both of his ears with both his hands and continued to read the letter. A sad and at the same time funny story. It's the best she could do, being illiterate...
It is true that most of us manage our digital and online stuff by ourselves, unlike the initial days of rushing to the computer centers with our very private and confidential materials. But to create our websites and to update, we still rely on outside sources. This book makes you, not only online literate, but equipped to build and maintain your own websites and, thus, to safeguard your self-reliance, privacy and self-management! My hope is that gone is the day your mail has to be read by the mail carrier!"
