Die gesamten Prozesse von Planung, Entwurf und Realisierung entwickeln sich in diesen Jahren zu einem übergreifenden Workflow. Die Grundlage dafür bildet die Informationstechnologie, in deren Rahmen sämtliche Vorgänge integriert werden. Zielpunkt dieser Entwicklung ist die digitale Konstruktion eines einheitlichen, leicht zugänglichen und kontinuierlich veränderbaren Gesamtmodells für ein Projekt. Es begleitet den Workflow des Architekten vom Entwurf über die Ausführungsplanung bis hin zur digitalen Fabrikation und wird beständig von allen beteiligten Professionen, Industrien und Gewerken genutzt und ergänzt.

Treibende Kraft dieser Entwicklung ist die digitale Fabrikation: die unmittelbare Herstellung von Bauteilen aus den digitalen Entwurfsdaten. Von diesem Schritt im Workflow aus werden sowohl die vorausgehenden digitalen Entwurfsschritte als auch die Projektorganisation und -realisierung in Kooperation mit der Bauindustrie mitbestimmt. Entsprechend hat das Buch drei Teile: Designing Design, Designing Assembly und Designing Industry. In jedem Teil werden die Methoden, Werkzeuge und Technologien dargestellt sowie Berichte aus Praxis und Lehre zu wichtigen Anwendungen, Problemen und Zusammenhängen gegeben. Zu den Beiträgern gehören Vertreter international führender Entwickler und Anwender, unter ihnen Gehry Technologies, Grimshaw Computational Design Unit, designtoproduction, Autodesk, die University of California, Ben van Berkel, Thom Mayne und Barkow Leibinger.

About the Author:

Scott Marble, a founding partner of Marble Fairbanks, is Director of Integrated Design at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP).

David Benjamin is Co-Founder of The Living and Assistant Professor of Architecture at Columbia University GSAPP.


Neil Denari is Principal of NMDA in Los Angeles and Professor of Architecture at UCLA.


Adam Marcus is an architect and Visiting Researcher at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture. He was a Senior Designer at Marble Fairbanks for five years.

Phil Bernstein is an architect, a Vice President at software provider Autodesk, and teaches Professional Practice at the Yale School of Architecture.
Ben van Berkel is a Founding Partner of UNStudio and is Professor of Conceptual Design and Head of the Architecture Department at the Stäedelschule in Frankfurt am Main.

Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger are Partners at Barkow Leibinger Architects.

Fabian Scheurer is a computer scientist and Co-Founder of designtoproduction.

Shane M. Burger was Director of the Computational Design Unit and Associate at Grimshaw Architects
from 2003-2011. He is currently Director of Design Technology at Woods Bagot and Director of the Smartgeometry Group.

James Kotronis is the US-eastern Regional Director at Gehry Technologies.

Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto are Principals of Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture. Jesse Reiser is Professor of Architecture at Princeton University.

Paolo Tombesi is Chair of Construction at the University of Melbourne.

Thom Mayne is Founder and Design Director of Morphosis Architects and a Professor at UCLA.

Marty Doscher is Founder and Director of SYNTHESIS Technology Integration based in Los Angeles. He was previously Technology Director at Morphosis Architects for eight years.

Craig Schwitter is the Managing Director for North America at Buro Happold Consulting Engineers. Ian Keough is Associate Technical Director.

John Nastasi is an architect and Founder and Director of the Product-Architecture Lab at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
