About the Book

English summary: Sergius, chief medical doctor of Res'ayna, first translator of Galen into Syriac, and scholar with many interests, completed the translation of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite during the last phase of his life, which ended in Constantinople after a diplomatic mission to Rome in 536. His edition of the areopagitic writings was undertaken only a few years after the appearance of this mysterious body of Greek pseudepigrapha, which was received in a single manuscript, the Syriac Sinaiticus 52 of the monastery of St. Catherine. Even though this important testimony is partly incomplete, it has been possible to reconstruct it almost in its entirety from fragments found in the Sinai itself and in several European libraries. The first volume (La versione siriaca di Sergio di Res'ayna (VI secolo). T, ISBN 9789042930827) presents a critical edition of the three most speculative writings of Dionysius: the Divine Names, the Mystical Theology, and the Letters. The volume is completed by a comprehensive Greek-Syriac index, followed by indices of personal names and Greek loan words. The second volume ( La versione siriaca di Sergio di Res'ayna (VI secolo). V, ISBN 9789042930834) contains the Italian translation of Sergius' edition. The introduction reviews the edition's history and language. The Greek text is placed within a cultural context most familiar to readers of Syriac, yet it maintains a flexible, intelligent fidelity to the original. The annotation to the Italian translation illustrates in detail this active hermeneutic dialogue between Sergius and the Dionysian text, emphasizing above all his work on style, the reworking of biblical quotations, and his interpolations of philosophical, theological, and Christological nature. This book is accompanied by an index of ancient authors and an annotated list of biblical sites. Italian text.
