Jusqu'à son plus ancien ancêtre connu, appelé chaturanga, en Inde, l'histoire des échecs remonte à plus de 1 500 ans; sa préhistoire est une question de conjecture. Il est originaire d'Inde et s'est rendu en Perse, où il a subi des changements dans ses formes et ses réglementations et est finalement devenu Shatranj. Les échecs ont été adoptés par le monde musulman lors de l'invasion et de la conquête arabes de la Perse, et ils ont ensuite voyagé en Europe via l'Espagne et l'Italie. Vers 1500 de notre ère, le jeu avait largement pris sa forme moderne.
De la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle aux années 1880, les échecs romantiques étaient la stratégie la plus populaire. Les parties d'échecs de cette période donnaient la priorité aux mouvements tactiques courts par rapport à la préparation stratégique à long terme. Les ères de jeu Scientifique, Hypermoderne et Nouveau Dynamisme sont celles qui ont suivi l'ère romantique. Le tournoi d'échecs moderne a commencé dans la seconde moitié du 19e siècle et le premier championnat du monde d'échecs reconnu a eu lieu en 1886. La Fédération mondiale des échecs a été fondée au 20e siècle, qui a également vu des progrès significatifs dans la théorie des échecs. Lors du légendaire match Deep Blue contre Garry Kasparov en 1997, un supercalculateur IBM a battu le champion du monde d'échecs en titre, Garry Kasparov, menant le jeu dans une ère de domination informatique. Depuis lors, l'analyse informatique, qui a fait ses débuts dans les années 1970 avec la sortie des premiers jeux d'échecs programmés disponibles dans le commerce, a grandement influencé la croissance de la théorie des échecs et est devenue un élément crucial de la préparation humaine professionnelle aux échecs. Le public a désormais accès à des techniques d'analyse informatique bien supérieures à celles de tout acteur humain grâce aux percées ultérieures du 21e siècle. Le 21e siècle a vu la popularité croissante des échecs en ligne, qui ont fait leur apparition au milieu des années 1990.
