Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Die pharmazeutische Industrie sieht sich zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends einer Vielzahl von Problemen gegenüber gestellt. Auslaufende Schutzfristen und Patente für die bereits auf dem Markt eingeführten Präparate, generelle Positionierungs- und Penetrierungsprobleme für neue Therapiekonzepte sowie das hohe finanzielle Risikopotenzial bei der Erforschung und Entwicklung innovativer Medikamente sind nur ein Teil dieser Problematik. Trotz Fusionen und Kooperationsstrategien der global agierenden Pharmaunternehmen wird die Situation auf dem Pharmamarkt immer schwieriger. In den nächsten zwei Jahren verlieren über 50% der 100 Top Produkte ihren Patentschutz und fallen als wesentliche Einnahmequelle für die Hersteller weg. Angesichts der immensen F&E-Ausgaben sind die Hersteller versucht, vorrangig sog. „Blockbuster"-Medikamente mit einem Umsatz im ersten Jahr von 1 Mrd. US-Dollar auf dem Markt zu bringen. Die bei der Einführung entstehenden Kosten übersteigen oftmals die F&E-Ausgaben. Relativ hohe Margen von mehr als dreißig Prozent, die auch kritisiert werden, sind zu einem gewissen Teil notwendig, um als Ausgleich das hohe Risiko bei der pharmazeutischen Forschung und Entwicklung zu kompensieren. Zudem besteht insbesondere in den USA ein riesiges Verlustpotenzial durch Medikamente, die sich nachträglich tatsächlich oder sogar nur angeblich als gesundheitsschädigend erweisen. Schadensersatzklagen in Milliardenhöhe, wie einer der jüngeren Fälle mit ‚Lipobay' von Bayer zeigt, sind nichts Ungewöhnliches. Die in der EU weitaus stärkeren und strikteren Eingriffe in das Gesundheitswesen und den Markt für ethische (verschreibungspflichtige) Medikamente als in den USA bilden auf dem europäischen Markt ein zusätzliches Risiko. Mit den gesteigerten Sparmaßnahmen im Gesundheitswesen und dem massiven Kostendruck bei der Entwicklung, Zulassung und Einführung eines Medikaments auf dem Absatzmarkt rückt auch die Bedeutung von Kommunikation und Marke
