Einige historische Hinweise über die direkte Blutdruckmessung sollen diese Arbeit einleiten. Die Messung des Druckes im Körperkreislauf des Menschen er- folgt auch heute zur Hauptsache nach der von VON RECKLINGHAUSEN und RIVA- ROCCI angegebenen und verbesserten indirekten Methode mit Staumanschette und Gefäßauskultation. Die direkte Druckmessung spielte in der Medizin während langer Zeit nur für die Bestimmung des peripheren Venendruckes eine gewisse Rolle. Dabei wurden die für die Tricuspidalstenose und -insuffizienz typischen formalen Druckabläufe bereits erfaßt und beschrieben. Die direkte Messung des arteriellen und des intrakardialen Druckes war bis vor wenigen Jahren die Domäne der Physiologen, wobei es sich immer um Messungen am Tier handelte. Die Fort- schritte und Irrtümer sowie Kontroversen sind eng mit der angewandten Methodik, insbesondere mit der Verbesserung der Manometer verknüpft. POISEUILLE (1828) verwendete ein U-förmiges Quecksilbermanometer, das von LUDWIG (1847) ver- bessert und mit einem Schwimmer ausgestattet erstmals eine Registrierung des Blutdruckes ermöglichte. Entsprechend der Trägheit dieses Systemes konnten die Druckamplituden nur zum kleinsten Teil erfaßt und zur Hauptsache nur ein dem Mitteldruck entsprechender Wert registriert werden. Zwei französische Physiologen, CHAUVEAU undMAREY (1863), haben wohl als erste in der Aorta und im linken Ventrikel unter Verwendung eines ganz primitiven Systems den Druck gemessen, indem sie einen Gummiballon an einem etwa 60 cm langen mit Luft gefüllten Metallrohr bei Pferden durch die Art. carotis in den linken Ventrikel einführten. Mit einem doppelläufigen System bestimmten sie bereits simultan den Druck im linken Ventrikel und in der Aorta.
