About the Book

Atophy is a shrinking or drying up of tissue, and it affects every cell in the body sooner or later. Disuse Atrophy is atrophy that occurs as a result of tissue sitting dormant and that dormancy causes decreased blood flow and decreased nutrient delivery as well as decreased waste removal. Disuse Atrophy, Your Brain, and Your Future explains disuse atrophy and how it can and will affect all tissue types on the cellular level and shows you how to prevent it, particularly when it comes to that most amazing of cells, the neuron. This book explains how you can slow the decline of the cells in your brain and live a full and vigorous mental life, no matter your age.
About the Author: Dr. Ken Bartholomew is a Medical Doctor, graduating from the University of Utah College of Medicine in 1976. He has published scientific papers as well as full-length books. At the onset of the personal computer era, long before most people had computers, Ken co-authored a book with Dr. Larry Weed on the potential role of computers in medicine. He has also published a book on death with dignity (Doctor, Please Close The Door) and is also preparing to publish his first novel with a second novel in the works. An Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, "Dr. B" has taught medical students from the University of South Dakota for 37 years, along with students in nursing, Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Assistant programs in 4 states. He is a member of the South Dakota State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. An accomplished climber, hiker, kayaker, marksman and archer, Dr. B has traveled throughout the western United States, Mexico, Canada and Alaska in search of adventure, and found himself face to face with death several times. Staring a grizzly down at ten yards or cutting his way out of a logjam while rafting the icy waters of the Alaska Wilderness taught him a new level of adrenaline rush. With over 2,000 hours of flight time, he is also a seasoned instrument-rated pilot and has 'dead-stick' landed his airplane on a single-lane dirt trail after the engine blew apart. The blessedly flat fields of South Dakota allowed for a makeshift runway, but had it been under cover of darkness or over mountainous terrain, the ending likely would have been much different. For fourteen years, Dr. B taught outdoor survival classes to Explorer Scouts in Faulkton, South Dakota, and his record for fire starting with flint and steel is 8 seconds. Living in the Midwest, the whitewater of Utah and surrounding states that once enticed him now elude him. Thus, extended touring kayak trips, teaching his children and their spouses the tricks of ultra-light camping, have largely replaced the rush of whitewater, save for an occasional trip out west. He still takes time to teach the next generation that if you can survive in the wilderness, you can surely survive in a leather-upholstered society. After practicing in the small town of Faulkton, S.D., for fourteen years and being on 24 hour call as the only physician in the county most of those years, Dr. B moved to Pierre, S.D. to join a group practice. However, he remains committed to Faulkton and rural medicine, and has made the weekly commute, blue skies or icy roads, logging over 100,000 miles the past 25 years to help provide medical care there.
