Der vorliegende Band vereint die Vortrage der Internationalen Fachkonferenz 'Dmitri Schostakowitsch - das Spatwerk und sein zeitgeschichtlicher Kontext', die im Oktober 2003 vom Musikwissenschaftlichen Institut der Hochschule fur Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden in Zusammenarbeit mit der Schostakowitsch-Gesellschaft Berlin veranstaltet wurde. Das Spatwerk von Schostakowitsch markiert einen Schaffensbereich, der unter Aspekten wie Reife, Abgeklartheit, summa vitae betrachtet werden kann, aber dabei zugleich einige ratselhafte Momente aufweist. Es umfasst Werke, die Schostakowitsch ab 1967 komponierte und zu denen mehrere Symphonien und Streichquartette, aber auch das 2. Violinkonzert, verschiedene Kammermusikwerke, Filmmusiken und Vokalwerke zahlen. Es sind vor allem systematische Gesichtspunkte, durch die dieses Buch - entsprechend dem Ablauf des Symposiums - in drei thematische Bereiche strukturiert wird. In 'Mythos Spatwerk' wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit und aus welchem Grund Schostakowitschs Spatwerk mit der Aura des Besonderen, Entruckten, Erhabenen usw. affiziert ist. 'Individuation' ist dem stilistischen Profil des Spatwerks gewidmet, sowohl hinsichtlich einzelner Werkgruppen und -gattungen als auch mit Blick auf die Kompositionstechnik und die Rolle des Wortes. In der Sektion 'Umfeld/Rezeption' geht es um das Bild, das der Komponist in den so unterschiedlichen Kulturbereichen in Ost und West hinterlassen hat, aber auch um die Rezeption neuer Kompositionstechniken und -stile speziell im Spatwerk.
