WHAT DO YOU WANT IN YOUR SPOUSE?

So often I hear people say God is no longer interested in the business of bringing couples together that from the time of mother Eve's failure at the garden of Eden, God stopped the "so called" meddling in human's affairs. My answer has always been no, that is very wrong.
The word of God made it explicitly clear that the Lord is ready to give us our heart desires, as long as we ask in faith and in line with His expectations from us.

My marriage is a clear proof that God is still in the business of making homes. On July 21, 1997 during my National Service year, I made out time to seek the face of the Lord regarding a life partner. When I asked God for a wife, He asked me this simple but complex question, "What do you want in your wife?" I was convinced, He was also interested in knowing my desires so I did not hesitate in telling my father without fear what I wanted, knowing fully well that He will give me the desires of my heart. "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4 ESV). "Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you: For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened" (Matthew 7:7, 8 NKJV).

In course of discussing with couples during counselling sessions, I have always asked this question in order to get to know their root. How did you come together? How did you start this union together? The responses I get always tell me if the union was founded in God from the beginning or if it is a product of match-making being evidence of personal choice. Often times the self-matched couples are the ones that have the most challenges. I am not saying it is because their marriages are matched-made that is why they are having challenges, but what I am saying here is that the problems can be traced to the wrong foundation. No marriage is perfect and no marriage is free from challenges. However, if your foundation is in God, you can always hold on to Him very tightly when challenges come.
A marriage not built on sure foundation is a disaster from the start, so if we don't have a secured foundation we can depend on when it feels like the roof is going to cave in, there is bound to be big trouble.
Genesis 2 sets the foundation for relationships between men and women.

"And the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion who will help him." So the Lord God formed from the soil every kind of animal and bird. He brought them to Adam* to see what he would call them, and Adam chose a name for each one. He gave names to all the livestock, birds, and wild animals. But still there was no companion suitable for him. So the Lord God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. He took one of Adam's ribs* and closed up the place from which he had taken it. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib and brought her to Adam.
"At last!" Adam exclaimed. "She is part of my own flesh and bone! She will be called 'woman, ' because she was taken out of a man." This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Now, although Adam and his wife were both naked, neither of them felt any shame" (Genesis 2:18-25 NLT).
