About the Book

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was one of eight persons convicted in the 1865 Lincoln assassination trial. He served almost four years in prison before being pardoned in 1869 by Lincoln's successor, President Andrew Johnson. Before Dr. Mudd's entanglement in the Lincoln assassination, he had lived the quiet life of a Southern Maryland country doctor, tobacco grower, and slave owner.

Every generation of Mudds in Southern Maryland prior to Dr. Mudd had owned slaves, beginning in 1680 when Dr. Mudd's great-great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Mudd, came to America from England. Dr. Mudd's father owned 61 slaves on one of the largest tobacco plantations in Southern Maryland.

Slavery permeated the society into which Sam Mudd was born and raised. His community, his state, his country, and his church had condoned slavery for more than two centuries. Slaves were servants in his home and in the homes of his friends and neighbors. Slaves worked the fields of the family farm and all the neighboring farms. Slavery was a normal part of his everyday life. It was therefore not surprising that Sam Mudd became a slave owner like all of his ancestors before him.

Sam Mudd graduated from medical school in 1856. When he married a year later, his father gave him a farm and slaves to help run it. His brother-in-law also contributed slaves. Dr. Mudd's new medical practice didn't yet produce much income, so he needed slaves to help him grow tobacco for income.

During the Civil War, president Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 freed the slaves in the states in rebellion. This didn't include Maryland, but Maryland's slaves were freed the following year, in November 1864, when a new state constitution went into effect. With his free slave labor gone, Dr. Mudd was thinking about selling his farm when he met a man who said he might be interested in buying it, John Wilkes Booth. Half a year later, Dr. Mudd was in prison, convicted of conspiring with Booth to assassinate the president.
.
This book tells the story of the slaves who lived and worked on Dr. Mudd's farm - how they were treated, why Dr. Mudd shot one, why some ran away to Washington, D.C. or joined the Union Army, their emancipation, their testimony at the Lincoln assassination trial, and their lives afterwards. None of this is found in the normal history books of the Lincoln assassination.
